I’m starting to become confused (nothing really new there) but this thread is about renewing the HQL permit, and we have multiple responses about how to enter HQL exempt status within the “HQL Renewal Form” on the state website. Why would we be “renewing” our HQL if in fact we are exempt from it in the first place?

That option (HQL exempt) doest show, if renewing. I was hoping to renew with HQL exempt. Might let it expire then apply with the exempt.

The default should be if you have Wear and Carry you don't need the HQL.

Why would you renew an HQL if you’re exempt from the HQL?

Received an email from MSP that my HQL is up for renewal in October. Went to the website and that PDF on what to do mentioned HQL EXEMPT with an HGP (wear and carry permit)
Training exempt to obtain the HQL or required to possess an HQL exempt? If you’re HQL exempt, why did you get one in the first place, and why would you feel the need to renew something you’re exempt from having in the first place?

I feel like I’m writing in clear English. Like I said, I’m still not sure why this is an issue, so I’m checking out.

The issue you are having is from those that are getting their HQL without a fee, training, or finger prints, because they have a W&C permit.
For those that got an HQL, and then recently got a W&C permit, they are not eligable for a "free" HQL renewal. The Statute when written and passed back in 2013, only applies to a new HQL for anyone with a W&C permit, not renewals.

I decided not to play games and just spent the $20 to renew. Hopefully will be the last time I have to and the hql is no more next time.

I renewed my HQL on 8/28, paid the 20 bucks and got a receipt, but haven't seen anything yet about the renewal being processed. My expiration date still has 10/23 on their website.

What about letting it expire and asking for new? As long as you are not planning on using it during the lapse ...

While we're making sense, anyone with a W&C permit should not have a 7-day wait for new purchase either.

Seems kinda dumb that I can walk in a gun store with a concealed pistol on my belt but have to "cool off" for a week before they allow my new purchase to come home with me.

Stop trying to make sense of MD gun laws (or any MD laws for that matter)
