Pistol or rifle for first time shooter?

I'll be taking a friend to the range for his first time shooting any type of firearm. From what I understand a .22 is probably something I should start with. I'm wondering about a couple of things. Pistol or rifle? Suppressed or not? Eventually both I'm thinking. He wants to shoot an AR...

Thinking of giving up on concealed carry

I've had my MD permit for over a year now and my SC permit for over 6 years. I'm retired so I'm not traveling around much and I live in a relatively safe area. When I do go out I don't visit dangerous places. When I go to Baltimore I'm going to a ball game so no guns allowed there. If I go...

CCI Standard Velocity at PSA deal

Palmetto State Amory has CCI Standard velocity .22 cal for $29.99/ brick. With shipping its still cheaper than anything I've seen lately. I was down there yesterday and they gave it to me for the online price. Even with the SC tax of 8% it worked out to 6.5 cents a round.

      Range reports B.S.?

Anyone else wonder if some of the range reports aren't a bit exaggerated? Not necessarily on this forum, but some of the range reports I've seen really make me wonder if someone isn't being entirely honest regarding their results. I recently saw on another forum someone showing a target with...

      Remembering first reload shot

I know some of you have been reloading a long time. Do you remember that first time you pulled the trigger on your first reloaded cartridge? I do, and it's probably the main reason I still reload. My neighbor gave me a single stage press and everything I needed to load 30-30. Bullets...

Shooting with a suppressor first time.

I got my first suppressor after a 10 month wait. Took it to the range yesterday and was amazed at how quiet it made things. The first round was CCI quiet out of a GSG 1911-22. After I pulled the trigger I wondered for a second if it had even fired! Amazingly quiet. It did not cycle the...

No new carry gun for me

At least not for now. I came this close (thumb and forefinger 1\8" apart) but held off. I was going over it in my mind why I wanted/needed a different carry piece. I'm currently carrying a Walter PPK 380. I was thinking I needed something lighter and smaller with more capacity. I see a lot...

      Fine Homebuilding magazines and books

I have about 40 Fine Homebuilding and Fine Woodworking magazines and books I'd like to give away. Just a random collection not in any order. Dates range from the 90's to 2011. Great condition from non smoking house. Pick up in Severna Park. PM me if you want them.

      Powder used in factory ammo?

Is there a way to find out what powder, and how much, is used in a particular brand of factory loaded ammo? For instance, if I wanted to know what type of powder, and what quantity was used in PMC bronze .357 ammo, is there a way to find out? Is this proprietary info not shared by the...

      Bad day at the range

Loaded up some 38spl rounds to determine which load would be best with the powder I have on hand. Loaded some Hornady XTP 158 g with 3.5, 3.7, 3.9g Titegroup. Shot 50 yds and all loads sucked. Shot from Ruger 77/357 bolt gun and Marlin 1894 lever gun. All shots low and all over the place...

      Complicated transfer question.

If someone asks you to keep their dead fathers pistol and rifle in your safe is there any problem with obliging their request? They may ask for them back someday. Pistol and rifle would qualify for C&R status. One other pistol would not. Their children may also ask for them back someday...

Couple of questions on SR 7625

I've got some older SR 7625 powder in a DuPont can. The load data that I can find differs quite a bit. Hodgdon site says 4.3-5.8 for Hornady 158g XTP. Another site says 5.5-6.5. Both sites refer to IMR SR7625 not Dupont. Was the name changed from DuPont to IMR at some point?

      Concealed carry and alcohol

Does anyone know what MD law says about consuming alcohol while carrying? Is it the same as driving .08 or is it zero? Looking for the actual law and not opinions. All I can find is "under the influence". Does that mean zero alcohol or the legal limit. Again, not looking for opinions on good...

      Measuring group sizes

How do most of you measure group sizes? Measure from center of POA to center of each shot in the group and add them up and divide by number of shots in the group? Or center of holes that are furthest apart?

Couple of questions re: quiet air rifles

I'm thinking about getting an air rifle to shoot in the basement. Nothing fancy or expensive. Quiet is important. 177 or 22? Gamo, Daisy ,Crossman or something else? I already have an older Daisy breakbarrel 600 fps but it's a little noisy. Thoughts?

      Hornady FTX .357" 140gr.

I can't find any load data for this bullet. I understand that this bullet was designed for lever guns and has a soft tip. I'd like to use either Bullseye or Titegroup since that's the powder I have on hand. Either .38 spl. or.357mag. Anybody else use these bullets?

      Marlin 39A from Ruger?

Saw this on RimfireCentral a little while ago. Quote: I asked Ruger about if they planned on bringing back the Marlin 39 A. Here is the reply : "We are now in the process of setting up production of new, Ruger-made, Marlin-branded firearms and anticipate bringing these products to...

      Ruger 77/357 walnut stock

There was some discussion on the Ruger forum about whether or not the 77/357 ever came with a walnut stock instead of the black plastic stock. I contacted Ruger and asked if a walnut stock was available for this model and was assured that it was. It's acually for the 44 mag version of this...
