Da! Certainly is Glorious Mosin Defender of Rodina most perfect rifle for huntings of the deers!

    1) Load with soft point.

    2) Fix bayonet.

    3) Stick apple on bayonet

    4) Wait very, very quietly.

I was reading this aloud to fionnros this eve and added my best approximation of the accent as I read.

We both laughed till we were out of breath

It's not a NO. It is OK to use a MN to hunt with as long as the law allows hunting with rifles where you plan to hunt. Use soft points.

You said you'd be in WV, so if they allow rifle in that county, you're good. (Not up on WV hunting regs.)

The 91/30 or M44 will have enough energy to meet most needs.

I want to take my MN hog hunting. i also want to use my garand for hog. I can't imagine having problems with stopping power for either.

The Mosin ws designed to hunt men. As far as I know, deer are bigger most the time, right? :D Just use soft points. Barnaul, Sellier & Bellot, Winchester and Wolf all make soft points in 54r with varying bullet weights, 148gr-203gr. Besides, if you get lost in the woods, make a campfire and you can make kabobs on the bayonet.

That's fine BUT you best use Garand loads. Modern hunting rounds use too slow a powder especially in heavier bullets and you're looking at a bent Op rod or worse.

I've done it, the hunting part with a MN, but never actually got one with it (I don't think I was using the right kind of apples). I, too, am a cheap bastard. I used 203 grain soft points.

In WV you can use anything .25 cal and up. No mention of any other special requirements AFAIK.

You made me look up WV laws out of curiosity.

or a rifle using rimfire ammunition of less than .25 caliber.

NOTE it says RIMFIRE so apparently ANY centerfire rifle is OK?

a handgun using a straight-walled case of less than .357 magnum cartridge or a bottle-necked case of less than .24 caliber.

UPDATE!!! Went to the range today to sight in the modern hunting rifles, and I also took my 1923 MN out for the first time as well. At 50 yards, I was hitting a 4" circle pretty regularly (with iron sights and crappy eyesight). I gotta say, I'm impressed. If I had some soft point ammo I'd use the MN for deer hunting. That is all.
