I got lucky and got one before the ridiculous ban. Have it set up as my home defense and PDW. For that role, I like it better then my AR.

Here's an early pic, since any AUG thread needs a photo or two!

    Where's the foot? I don't see a foot...

    Nice looking AUG!

    Looks great!

I'm trying to make sense of all the variants. There's a used one at a LGS near me, and of course, plenty on GB.

I don't understand the AUG love on here, and as I've mentioned, I currently own both the AUG A3 and a Tavor and have pretty significant trigger time behind both. Maybe I have different priorities.

The AUG has a quick-change barrel, but I've NEVER used that other than for maintenance purposes or cheap party tricks, where it is nice, but hardly a game changer. I've yet to hear of someone who claims they made a habit of swapping AUG barrels on the range, or even in combat. Admittedly, you can convert it to left-handed ejection easily... trade-off being that you don't get a matching right-hand side charging handle, and you don't get to use AR magazines in lefty mode. The Tavor is slower to convert, but winds up in a true lefty config when you're done.

The Tavor has a much better magazine release, and, IMHO, a much more usable selector for people raised on ARs. I'm not a big fan of the Tavor's bolt-release, but 99% of the time, I just use the charging handle (conveniently located right where I need to put my support hand anyways). I also think the balance is much better, with the weight of the gun in the back. Did anyone mention that the Tavor has tritium factory BUIS, whereas the AUG has no BUIS? That was one of the reasons I used a TA01NSN on my A3, so that I'd have some backup irons.

I like the Tavor too, but in handling the two back-to-back, I thought Tavor cheek weld was difficult and it didn't roll-up on the shoulder as well. The Tavor was noticeably more compact however.

I'm still undecided, but leaning AUG first at this point (for the reasons Wayne noted above). Wish I could find one of each to rent.

Can't say I've had that issue with the Tavor or the AUG. In my experience, cheek weld issues on the Tavor tend to be related to optic height. You want to use optics that are at "1/3 AR-15 co-witness height" on the Tavor... if you go lower, you'll have trouble smushing your cheek against the rifle to get low enough to see through the optic.

Yes, that and the shape. Do you have a pic of your Tavor/Optic setup you can share?

Yeah, I'll dig them both out of the safe tonight and you can see the side-by-side. Much as I rag on the AUG in this thread, it's really a nice enough rifle; I just think it has not aged as well as some people claim it has, and that there is a reason you don't see most new military rifle systems bothering with some of the AUG features that people hype up... which is that they're not really as useful as claimed.

I was able to compare these side-by-side after work. No need to dig them out (unless you want to post pics!). Appreciate the offer though.

Interesting that the 18" Tavor is about the same OAL as the AUG.

It's hard to be objective when you don't own both, because there's always some part of you trying to justify buying one over the other when you don't own both.

Personally, I'm a realist. I own plenty of guns that I consider obsolete, even if they're pretty (hello, Galil SAR!). This does not mean they're ineffective firearms, but rather that they wouldn't be my first choice in a SHTF-type situation.

to be honest, what i'm really saying is that between the two of them, i bought the one i prefer (that was the reason). true, i'll justify my purchase, but i'm also not going to buy the one i like less just to make my choice more unimpeachable, you know?

Tavor does have one advantage over the AUG in my book: technically, there's a scenario where you can actually buy a Tavor in MD in 2016.

Having shot both and owned neither, I would go Tavor or X95. Trigger is shit like the AUG, but it handles better and takes AR15 mags. All the AUG fanboys like to claim it's the best and most reliable mag ever, but when you've got like a hundred AR15 mags sitting around why would you want to invest in another 5.56 mag (which I might add is rather expensive). Of course you could get the AUG that takes AR15 mags, but then it's not really an AUG anymore is it?

Moot point since this conversation takes place in MD.

Yes, our overlords in a Annapolis have made our lives so much easier by banning the AUG and others. No more fretting about "did I buy the right gun?" or does this gun's mag make my ass look fat when it is stuffed in my back pocket?

The whole investing in another mag platform thing is kind of silly. Most of us already have another rifle or two (ex: AK47/74, Ruger Mini 14/30, HK 93/91) and didn't worry about mag compatibility when purchasing it. The AR rifle's amazing popularity allows us to take advantage of the fact that some rifle manufacturers have adapted their product to it. If you want to buy guns based on one mag type is fine... myself, I like the diversity of the guns that I have and what they can do.

You have to admit though, the AUG has that exotic flair to it. I know the Tavor does too, I own both :D

If it is a matter of owning something different, unique, and when you break it out at the range its unexpected, then the AUG is it. As stated though, your last chance to buy one was October 2013. MSAR copy is currently the only alternative.
