I have a cheap red dot I want to install and I think I need to use loctite. Which type is best to hold it but still come apart?
    Thanks

Locktite comes in a chap stick form, stays in place better than the liquid during install. McMaster Carr had it I think.

Loctite blue, as recommended so far. I just got done removing a choke from a shotgun which I had to Loctite. Took a little heat to loosen it (used a heat gun).

If you only could buy two Loctite's for your firearms, which two would they be? Blue and red? Blue and green? What numbers, if you know.

Red is usually overkill for guns. Blue or purple are useful without being too strong.

620 green for bedding AR barrels and the very rare dab of blue for a screw (and I can’t even tell you the last time I did that) other than that Loctite doesn’t go near my firearms

Don’t forget a tube of Vibra-Tite VC3. Gummy, reusable red/pink stuff that smells bad.

But unlike loctite it doesn’t harden. It’s perfect for things like kydex holster screws when you might want to make an adjustment.

For gun screws that you don't want to move, heat them up and install them while they're hot. When they shrink they'll be tight as can be and very hard to remove. ( Make sure you want them to be more or less permanent or very rarely disassembled.)
Sometimes chasing the threads and carefully cleaning the screw/threads with a solvent or even using alternate screws makes a better fit then you could just stake once they are in place.
When I use a thread compound I use black finger nail polish, just a dab on the threads and not accumulated in the bottom of a blind hole. That way the compound doesn't puddle at the base of the screw, dry harden and crack over time and just get loose again.
I have used both blue and red loc-tite in the past, sometimes I cant tell if it works any better than finger nail polish for very small screws like you find on bases. Cleanliness and fit is what keeps them tight anyway.

Dab of blue Loctite on the threads is all you need. I use a paper clip to apply an amount like you see on Magpul screws that come with their M-Lok parts. It's really not complicated, don't over think it.
