I'm hoping to one day get my hands on an Svt40. What are your guys feelings about them. I've heard they can be a little picky with ammo, what's your experience? Subsequently would anyone that owns an svt be interested in trading for a mostly converted .223 saiga

I have a 1943 refurbed Tula, I don’t believe it was shot since import until when I got it a year or two ago. When I got it I started at gas setting 1 and worked it up to 3, which is apparently the “normal” one to use as I understand. Ive shot 148 grain tulammo, red army standard and Barnaul through it and honestly can’t recall any malfunctions.

If you get one in good condition and matching I think it would run pretty decent

I got this Bubba’ed SVT years ago for $300. The Russians screwed up and put the cleaning rod on the side, instead of under the barrel. Must’ve drank a LOT of Vodka that day!!

But it shoots various milsurp ammo OK.

I also have these arrow/oval SVTs. My gaming friends say the ones with the arrow/star are much more cool and shooter better. So I definitely need to get one of those things.

It looks like you got not a SVT-40, but a much more rare predecessor, SVT-38!!!
Just from the cleaning rod being on the side, it matches the pics from Wikipedia:
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/SVT-40#/media/File:SVT-38_-_Ryssland_-_AM.045576.jpg

Svt 40’s are cool, but this is even cooler. Probably Finnish capture in the first trial of the rifle, Winter War.

I have owned and shot both '38's and '40's. They are light for the caliber and the muzzle break makes enemies at places like AGC.

If you are going to shoot it, the problem will be that parts are almost non existent. One of the most at risk parts is the op rod as it is long and skinny.

You know that's an svt38 right?
Wanna get rid of any of them and help out a young firearms collector??

Yeah those arrow/oval ones are junk, I'll trade you mine for one.

Seriously though that 38 and the Podolsk rifles are awesome

ALL of these ol’ Rooshin Mousers are junk. Dang Commie guns....

-Oh yeah, someone is teasing us with unobtanium. I'll steal a line from my favorite classic movie, The Maltese Falcon: "It's the stuff dreams are made of."
-To get back to the thread author's question: I've shot mine and enjoy it. Runs well but is a PIA to clean the gas system. Sadly, like everything else, the days of $300 SVTs is ancient history. I've seen run-of-the-mill SVT-40s like my early 90s Russian import fetch $1500 or more. Double that for what h2u posted, if you can find one as most are buried deep in collections. Lord knows what the SVT-38 would sell for.

Value-wise, your Saiga is worth about one SVT38 magazine :D
Once you get a rifle, you’ll want the correct “accessories”. Those are pricey these days. Heck, even the refurb stuff has gone through the roof.

Here are examples of the correct bayonet for each type of rifle. These are non-refurb as well.

I mean converted saigas these days could go for around 1.5 to 2k. Especially since it's in 5.56 with the new Russian import ban
