Saw a Ted Williams (Sears) M400 over/under in 20ga for sale for $900 recently. Passed on it. Regret it.

I would love to own a department store gun, just as a piece of history. Coincidentally I'd also like an O/U in 20ga for teal/dove.

What other shotguns should I be on the lookout for? Have any of you seen any good deals on old dept store guns?

This was years ago but I found a JC Penney shotgun in a pawn shop in Frederick...probably was originally sold through the Penney store in Frederick. It was a High Standard Flight King made under the Penney name...super smooth piece. It had a 28" barrel...I had it cut down to 20" and re-crowned. Even after paying a gunsmith to do that I still had less than $200 in it.

My first shotgun was a mossberg model 600a. Came from Joe the motors in hagerstown md. The same as a model 500. Would have been around 1974 or so.

Was at my local gun shop last weekend . They had two 410 shotguns and two 22 caliber bolt action rifles there. One was a J.C, Higgins and one was a Montgomery Wards. Also two others were Sear or J.C. Penny . Im thinking same person brought them all in and sold them. I almost grabbed one of the 22 bolt actions.

Montgomery Ward had the Western Field name. The Revelation name was sold by Western Auto. There are a LOT of these firearms out there, from a bygone era when stores large and small sold guns as a matter of course.

here's a few for ya I own JC Higgins model 101.1 Wards Hercules model10 and a Mauregan Arms. All single shot 12ga. I'm afraid to shoot the Mauregan Arms one but the other two shoot fine.

Somewhere I have a sears 30/30 with an Unertal scope thats near mint.
Maybe one of the boys has it.
    Its a 4x hawk side-mount.
I missed some sika deer with it and never shot it again.
The reciever is blotchy on it like they are sometimes so I guess they roll marked it for Sears.
Model 54 maybe, I cant remember.

I had a Westernfield 550 (I think it was). A Mossberg 500. Great shotgun, but I already had a 500 so I traded it for something my wife and daughter would shoot. I currently have an old, 1920s Westernfield 30, which is a Stevens/Savage 520 double hump all steel shotgun. It's a takedown, and splits in half. Cool old gun. Smells like old.

Here's some trivia for you .

The Ted Williams M100 .30-30 is a Win M94 , Except that it is actual a Short Rifle rather than a Carbine

My first shotgun was a bolt action Western Field 12 Ga, Mossberg I think. Still have it.
My Father got it from Duffy's for me, paid $39 for it.

I scored a WesternField M79 lever action 30-30 (sold long ago by M. Wards I believe) for $300 during covid. When I first came across it it looked like a Mariln (it does) but researched before buying it that is a Mossberg 472. It’s not perfect but shoots well and I won’t hesitate to take it hunting. Also scored a WesternField 410 pump (Mossberg as well) from my local gun store for $150 two years ago. Most people know what they are and ask a premium for them, but deals can still be had. My last one is a Westernfield 550 12ga (also mossberg) that I pieced together for about $125. I love keeping my eye out for these things. Was on the hook to pick up a Ted Williams 30-30 couple years ago, but couldn’t make the meet work.

I have a JC Higgins .410 pump. I forget the model number. Nice gun. Long LOP for what it is though. I've never had the heart to cut it down so it fits my kids better. So far they've never used it hunting, but have shot it at the range a few times. Heck, I've yet to get it out hunting. A hand-me-down from my wife's uncle. I doubt I'll ever get rid of it. Neat to own a Sears shotgun.

I have a Marlin model 200 in 12ga. It's a rebranded NEF/H&R topper that was only sold at K-mart. The serial number even starts with KM.

I have a Western field 550 in 20ga with the adjustable choke. It shoots pretty well. Only issue is the safety broke and, despite being a Mossberg 500 clone, I can't seem to find the right part.

I go through em like wildfire. I still own a Ranger 104.3 sXs 12ga, which is a 1916-19 era Sears branded LC Smith by Hunter Arms. Tight as a drum and a good shooter.
