And the sergeant and higher ranks aren't the ones out and about. They aren't the ones encountering the armed subject in the auditorium, they are back at the stain behind locked doors.

It's a way of sitting on the fence. Capitulate to the liberals who don't want to see any armed police, but also acknowledge the reality that you need armed police in 2023. Accomplishes both tasks, while actually solving nothing.

Very good points here. Absolutely right.

    I wonder what 9mm firearm/ammo they'll be equipped with.

    Yep. Agreed.

    Speaking of "elite":

    Full Time Main Campus Undergraduate

    Entering Fall 2020 or later

    2023/2024$64,700/academic year
    2022/2023$62,110/academic year

Entering Fall 2019 or Spring 2020*$56,845 per academic year
Entering Fall 2018 or Spring 2019*$55,140 per academic year

    That's simply eye-watering....

Or even letting Police defend themselves and others , instead of waiting 10 minutes for Other Police to arrive .

Other statistics also tell the story: The average response time for top-priority calls is one minute and 40 seconds slower than in 2019. The typical patrol officer is responding to 23 percent more calls than five years ago. To perform tasks deemed mission critical, officers had to work more than 1.1 million overtime hours each of the past three years — the equivalent of about 550 additional officers annually.

MPD has a 1:40 slower average response time now for top-priority calls vs FY2019 when the force had 3,810 officers vs the fewer than 3,400 officers it has now (and which keeps dropping every month)....

I’m curious what GWPD’s response time will be for one of these “armed” officers to arrive or for the call to get to MPD to arrive at a specific campus location they may not be familiar with. MPD’s response time to assist GWPD will also be hampered by its lower staffing as well.

Unbelievably stupid and dangerous on so many levels.

What an absolute clown show this is:

While we appreciate the notion of “reimagining public safety,” we find the recent decision a disappointing example of a narrowing of the imagination. We also find it inconsistent with the dignity of all persons and more likely to reduce safety rather than enhance it.

See if you can make it through the rest of the faculty letter.

We need a holistic approach to campus safety, not one born of desperation and resignation over mass shootings. Twenty-odd 9 mm handguns send a message that officials know there’s a problem, but arming GWPD is no solution to gun violence. These weapons and the officers who will wield them won’t “do something” unless they’re used to stop a crisis – or to start one.

This unhealthy obsession with radical empathy for criminals is disgusting. Go to class. Go home. Follow officer commands when given. JFC.

That doesn’t make much sense for a university named after the father of our country.
    "Revolutionaries" got picked.

After 12 months, 47,000 points of feedback and 8,000 moniker suggestions whittled down in a comprehensive community engagement process to four finalists, the university announced on Wednesday its new moniker: the Revolutionaries.

    ......

The full adoption of the Revolutionaries moniker will be implemented during the 2023-24 academic year. Over the coming weeks and months, GW will develop the visual identity for the Revolutionaries moniker and begin the process of bringing it to life on athletic uniforms, campus signage and merchandise.

This could have been much worse.

So . They think as long is it will be a semi seperate dedicated Armed Response Subunit , no point to bother with handguns , just do it right with shotguns and patrol rifles ?

Wrighton said in an interview with The Hatchet that GWPD will arm roughly 20 of about 50 total GWPD officers with 9 mm handguns in response to heightened gun violence in the United States, including recent school shootings at colleges like Michigan State University and the University of Virginia.
    …..

GWPD Chief James Tate said the armed officers will have a rank of sergeant or higher, and many in the group are already certified to carry firearms from when they worked in other police departments and agencies before coming to GWPD.

I couldn't imagine rifles or shotguns receiving approval now, but hey, maybe someday.

Dang , slipped up again with typed words vs subtlety & irony to illustrate absurdity .

Yeah , I comprehend the situation , and the counter views , and the realistic predictions how it will play out .

The student activists and leftist faculty actually think that every morning LE gets out of bed planning to kill three oppressed minorities to kill before lunch
. And if the whole campus will just offer themselves up as sacrificial victims , all the criminal malfactors , crazies , and terrorists will suddenly mend their anti social ways , hold hands , and sing multicultural spirituals all day and all night .

And whatever happens or doesn't happen , will always and exclusively be the fault of the GWPD , no matter what they do or don't do .
