Open carry advertises you are carrying and makes you the first target if someone is going to be shooting in traffic. It can also lead to someone taking your gun from you while you are waiting to turn left.

Yes, I thought you'd have to be careful if you got pulled over and the cop started drooling over your Doritos. That would be the time to inform him that you're carrying before he gets the snack-sniffing dog to give him an excuse to confiscate the Doritos.

    §5–307.
    (a) A permit is valid for each handgun legally in the possession of the person
to whom the permit is issued.
    (b) (1) Subject to subsection (c) of this section, a permit issued under this subtitle shall restrict the wearing, carrying, and transporting of a handgun by the person to whom the permit is issued to wearing, carrying, or transporting a handgun concealed from view:
    (i) under or within an article of the person’s clothing; or
    (ii) within an enclosed case.”

sounds like I need a cross draw holster for the truck. Darn, I liked my little pistol holder
    I stand corrected

I have a gun magnet in my truck and just throw a hat over it. That makes it “concealed under clothing” in my book. Also makes a nice hat rack for my fishing hat.

Swinokur was one of the first to get his permit after Bruen.

I think the question arises from the desire for a permit holder to reposition his gun while driving, for comfort and accessibility.

For instance, someone might put their pistol in the cup holder while driving. Would that be legal? I think that's the basis of Swinokur's question.

There simply is no case law. There is no absolute black/white answer. I think a permit holder should keep the gun covered. But would a Doritos bag meet the unknown, unestablished legal standard?

Covering the gun with a hat or other "article of clothing" is probably safer.
Of course, there will probably never be an answer to the question. Quite a few steps would have to occur before the question could even be legally addressed. It probably never will be.

Unless you're in a situation, perhaps stopped in traffic to let the Pro Hamas rally pass, and a cop was walking through said traffic and happened to glance down and see it I doubt it would ever be a problem. When I have to work in the 'hood in either Charm City or DC I will routinely put mine under my right thigh on the seat.

Sounds like you just keep a pair of dirty drawers in your vehicle and cover your gun on the seat

You'll be fine in VA. I used to OC there when i was under 21 and coudnt get a permit. Otherwise if youre above age getting the permit erases this question completely.

Years ago, Virginia used to require those open carrying in their cars to keep the gun visible from the outside. Virginians used to put their guns on the dashboard for that reason.

Interestingly, it doesn't say clothing you are wearing, just "under or within an article of the person's clothing". That being said, technically, you should be able to drape your jacket, shirt, etc., over your handgun in a car mount.

I think it's best to keep it covered.

Whiskey3, with that cool pistol mount he has, should plan ahead and have an idea how he'll handle it if he gets pulled over. I can imagine some LEOs overreacting if they saw that.

I'm in favor of keeping it cover, yet readily available. I don't like the idea of having it in a cup holder etc. You get into an accident, it could very well go flying. Same thing with cell phones. If they aren't attached to your body(my personal preference), they need to be anchored down, within your reach. That's just me.
