      8mm mauser stuff

If you have your mind set on using solids in a barrel which is cut riffling, than I would do two things. #1 call the bullet manufacturer and ask their expert opinion. #2 Seat the bullet a bit deeper than normal to give yourself a tad more freebore. This will reduce the pressures in the barrel...

      8mm mauser stuff

Is this with a OE military barrel or a new stile button rifled barrel? If it is an OE barrel I wouldn't use solid bullets in it. They are much harder than lead core bullets and I just wouldn't risk shooting them through deep rifled(cut) rifling. But that is just me. If it is a button rifled...

Fun rounds to shoot and DEVISTATION to varmints.

Those are the ones I started out with. They were loaded to 4300FPS. So not as fast as they could have been. I was surprised how accurate they were. I used to shoot at glass insulators on telephone poles with those back in the 70s. Yes I was young and stupid. I had no problem hitting the...

Fun rounds to shoot and DEVISTATION to varmints.

Back in the early 60s my dad converted a BB rifle to use 22cal starting caps. I wish he still had it. When we lived in India we shot feral dogs and cats with it. You had to hit them in the head though. I just like the idea of the sabot. But since it was mentioned before about the irony of using...

Fun rounds to shoot and DEVISTATION to varmints.

Yes the Z-Max bullets are rather thin walled but they do stay together. I use both .311 and .223 Z-Max bullets because I got a really good buy on them a few years ago and bought 2k of each. But the sabot rounds are a blast. I'm pushing around 4k on the 7.62x39 and about 4.5k on the 7.62x45. If...

Fun rounds to shoot and DEVISTATION to varmints.

The 30-06 Accelerators were the ones I did start with back then. As stated, they shot well but were not what was expected from the 06 cartridge. They are of much better use in the small 30cal cartridges. That is when they come into their own. There is also available a 50cal sabot for a 30cal...

Fun rounds to shoot and DEVISTATION to varmints.

That would be ironic. I actually think that the sabots would be quicker. Not as accurate but get down range faster. The 300BO never even crossed my mind. The 30M1 Carbine would be another good one. I definitely would never load it in anything larger than the 308Win. I know that it was a total...

Fun rounds to shoot and DEVISTATION to varmints.

I have been using sabots for many decades. First remember using them when they were available in loaded ammunition from Remington back in the 80s. I first started reloading with sabots about 20+ years ago but foolishly was loading the standard ammo such as 30-06 and 308. I found that there was...

      Vz.52 Rifle Vs. Sks

The one thing I would like to add for reloading the 7.62x45 and Czech made 7.62x39 ammunition is that the exact powder which was used for this ammo is now sold in the US as AA2200. Originally this powder was brought into the US as a surplus powder from Czechoslovakia some decades ago as DP2200...

      8mm mauser stuff

Than for your purposes you would LOVE the PPU ammo. In either the 175, 196, or 198gr. But because this ammo is loaded a bit lighter than the S&B ammo than I would sight your rifle in one and stay with it. Myself my favorite is the 185gr Grom (Thunder) but it is hard to find. It is loaded a bit...

      Vz.52 Rifle Vs. Sks

I wont argue that the SKS might be a better "combat carbine" The Vz has definitely seen it's share of combat though in Africa, South America, Middle East and South East Asia. Where, as you say the SKS is the "hammer" the Vz is "sickle". These two rifles were designed for two completely different...

      Vz.52 Rifle Vs. Sks

I would think that since he started this post in April of 2013, He would already have one. The irony is that in 2013 ammo for the Vz was still easy to get. I do still have a ton of it and doubt I will ever run out. So today the only issue would be that the ammo for the SKS is much easier to get...

      8mm mauser stuff

Just FYI the best by far commercial ammunition in 8x57 and 8x57R is Sellier and Bellot. It is loaded to full European pressure specs. For plinking you cant beat PPU. I load and shoot a lot of 8x57 and it is one of my three most favorite rounds to shoot. I still believe it is one of the best...

OK I edited the post for paragraph layout and also at the same time updated the info. Many websites do not allow this, to save space. So normally I don't attempt it. Gunny
