      Glock 42 Ammo Preferences

Yup, as I wrote in Post #17. We're getting way off the subject of this thread, but again, my EDC is a Sig P290RS -- not only because of the size, but because I'm not 100% comfortable with striker-fired guns (I don't want to start an argument -- I just prefer a long initial trigger pull). The...

      Glock 42 Ammo Preferences

Oh, yes, indeed. :party29: I had no idea before, how much the support (and comfort) of a proper gun belt gives. In fact, I own several -- Nexbelt and Kore Essentials. Unfortunately the buckles don't interchange. I wear one all day every day. My leather OWB holster has belt snaps of the...

      Glock 42 Ammo Preferences

Man, this thread has gotten out of hand. Jeez, people... I was originally posting about what kinds of commercial ammo works in a Glock 42. With a bit about hand-loads to do the same. I don't know how we got onto the subject of EDC... But I agree (with Hibs) that comfort is important. I use...

      Glock 42 Ammo Preferences

And I hear ya on that. I think the biggest question may be whether a bullet will expand at all (reliably) or not, at typical .380 velocities -- less than 900 fps. I just don't know enough about that, but I understand the answer may be no. And if they don't expand, then they're no better...

I hear ya. I've got a few boxes of Cor-Bon 90gn JHP and Underwood 90gn Extreme Penetrator on the shelf. Both are probably similar really-hot loads as the Buffalo Bore -- I'm pretty sure above SAAMI specs. The reason those are going to continue just sitting on my shelf (well, maybe until...

      Glock 42 Ammo Preferences

Here's an update, since I'm the OP. I was looking for .380 defensive ammo (I know, oxymoron) that would work reliably in my wife's Glock 42. Inceptor ARX was certainly not it. I haven't had a chance to try the Hornady Critical Defense 90gr FTX ammo yet. But for hand-loading, I got some...

      Glock 42 Ammo Preferences

You mean, Glock should make a double-stack .380 like the Ruger LCP Max, right? Maybe... if the G42 wasn't so picky with ammo... Anyway, I got some Strike Industries +2 magazine base extensions. Brings capacity up to 8+1, which is better than 6+1. And they make the gun fit the hand much...

I actually found some Hornady Critical Defense at Bass Pro yesterday, and got five boxes. Like I said, same bullet (except for the polymer plug) as the Hornady American Gunner XTP that have worked fine in the G42. Hopefully same powder charge. I'll test the Critical Defense...

      Glock 42 Ammo Preferences

Yeah, I've got some ammo with Barnes bullets too, but I don't think it's even worth trying in the G42. Mainly because even if it did work, I've only got a couple 20-rd boxes... So that's the same good result that I've had with Hornady (American Gunner) XTP. I think identical bullet and...

      9mm Luger Case Volume

Yeah, that's what I figured/hoped. I'll still trash these when I find them, but won't particularly sweat it. My 9x19 loads are pretty middlin' (115gn FMJ with 4.5gn of HP-38), and they cycle all my 9x19 handguns just fine. I've been wondering about that too. Wow.

      Glock 42 Ammo Preferences

Yup. Always been that way for hollow-points or other good defensive bullets. I can reload FMJs all day long for practice with the G42 (I've still got SPPs, and they're slowly becoming more available -- but $$$). The issue is availability (and reliability) of defensive .380. I just...

      9mm Luger Case Volume

That's something I hadn't thought of. The bullet keeps accelerating, because the pressure behind it is so much greater than in front. But that rapidly-increasing volume behind the bullet would also tend to cool that volume really fast, at least relatively. That's qualitatively... I wonder...

      Glock 42 Ammo Preferences

Interesting. The G42 has, generally, a really good reputation. I guess as long as you're 100% confident in (and have thoroughly tested) the ammo you're using. Also interesting that a relatively, how shall I put it, inexpensive .380 like the Bersa Thunder should be so much more reliable with...

      9mm Luger Case Volume

Sooo... we're digressing a bit, but this is interesting... Chamber pressure peaks just as (or barely after) the bullet starts to move. Makes sense. Is that because most of the burn is complete; or because the bullet's movement starts opening up the available volume? Powder is still burning...

      9mm Luger Case Volume

Well, barrel length should affect the pressure that can build up (not just in the chamber) before the bullet exits the muzzle. Or does a firearm reach max chamber pressure before the bullet exits...? With a short barrel (my SigSauer P290 RS only has a 2.9" barrel), there's a significant...
