+1 for the Glock 19. All of the pistol recommendations here are good though. See which one feels the most comfortable in your hand. It's hard to shoot well with an uncomfortable pistol.
You are correct there! The cost can definitely be a factor. I know a Remington 1100 or 1187 barrel can be had for about $350. The 24" Benelli SBE barrel I bought for $550, which was still worth it. I can only imagine what the Browning barrels cost...
I bought a FN SLP for 3-gun. It is a great shotgun. But the comb is too high for me and the SLP doesn't ship with any shims to change the drop of the stock. My sore cheek and jaw convinced me to look for an alternative. I looked at the JP 930 as a replacement, but I ended up taking my Benelli...
SVI makes amazing stuff. They also make phenomenal single stack 1911's, not just double-stack race guns. I opted for the double stack, one with iron sights and one with ports and optic. And interchangeable barrels for multiple calibers.
The only problem is feeling worthy enough. When I shoot...
I would put the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 at the top of the list, just for aftermarket parts you might be interested in later. The other shotguns will work fine but have less aftermarket. Also, I would avoid getting a shotgun with a pistol grip only... After you shoot the pistol grip a few...
I think you are on the right track with the Glock 20 and the Witness Hunter. I have both and they are my go-to guns for the woods. I take the Glock 20 when I know the weather will be bad. Other than that, I take the Witness Hunter. Be sure and check out some of the loads by Underwood Ammo...
For sharpening at home, Lansky-type sharpeners work really well. For sharpening in the field, a fine ceramic rod or ceramic 'V' sharpener works great. The Smith's Pocket Pal works well enough and it's easy to keep with you. It has both ceramic and carbide. I don't recommend using carbide...
I have an Eotech, an Aimpoint PRO, and a Leupold prismatic. They are all excellent and I tend to swap them around a lot for 3-gun. What I have found that I have been leaving on my AR the most is a Bushnell 1-4X PCL. Great scope. Never been happier with a $200 purchase. I've had my eye on a...
My whole family uses O/Us. My father and brother both use Winchester 101s, which Winchester recently started making again, and I wish I had one! My uncle always preferred a Ruger Red Label which was good for just about everything. I have been using a Fabarm Black Lion and a Franchi Falconette...
I own a Glock, a XDm, a FNS9, and a M&P (Actually more than one of each).
They are all excellent guns, very near in cost and capability. I have not had issues with any of them. I have heard people say that they have had issues with all 4 of these, and I have to believe that to be a production...
I have encountered this question before as well, and here is the analogy I use:
If I'm out hunting a dangerous animal, like a large feral hog, I can do so with a bolt-action rifle from a tree stand. However, if I am out walking on the ground through thick brush, in an area with a population...
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I think what alarms people here, regardless of what this guy did or didn't do, is that it illustrates the very real possibility of jail time for 'mala prohibita' regulations, regardless of criminal intent. I know it scares me.
