1. Start with .22 LR. It's relatively quiet, inexpensive, and the recoil is not objectionable. If you can get access to a good air rifle or air pistol, they are even better.
2. Take your time. Shoot ONE shot well. Then move to multiple shots. In the words of LCOL Melvin...
As others have mentioned, I'd look at GunBroker completed auctions. In particular, look at the auctions with multiple bids...there are some dealers who will advertise the same thing over and over at a hyperinflated price.
