Are they in a hurry to complete the transaction? A C&R license for the reciepient of the gift would be pretty easy & fast, and the $30 cost is probably about what they would pay for one transfer. Then it would be "Hi, here's your gun" and "Thanks! Now I'll just enter it in my book." Plus...
The only "registration" is in the bound book of the FFL who does the engraving. Neither you nor the FFL sold the gun. If you later sell the gun, then it goes into the Md. sales registration.
