Public lands and Hunting. Declining numbers of hunters

Thanks for the advice. I have an Excalibur Micro Suppressor which meets those specs. I'll keep an eye out for the bow hunter class. I didn't know there was one!

Public lands and Hunting. Declining numbers of hunters

Whitetail with a crossbow, primarily. I have a M1a Scout in .308 and ARs in .223, among other guns, but admittedly neither are "traditional" bolt action hunting rifles. I'd be open to anything, really, but I don't have a shotgun. Yet.

Public lands and Hunting. Declining numbers of hunters

I'm in the boat of having a father who didn't hunt so I never learned as a kid. Now I'm in my mid-30s and looking to get in to the sport. I've completed Hunter Ed, have a license but missed the MD Mentored Hunt Program this season. Any tips for finding someone willing to take a newbie out of...

      Surplus M2 Ball ammo?

Try www.ammogarand.com. I've purchased from them in the past with good results. Supplies and offerings ebb and flow.

      new AR zero

They have good customer service and the rep I spoke with about free-floating their HBAR varmint rifle was a friendly guy who you could tell liked to chat about guns. They have a good warranty. I also find their email newsletters full of useful information from their gunsmith on how to modify a...

      Online purchase

If you're looking to buy new, try calling other gun shops. Many can order what you want from their distributors. I've found that buying a gun online and then having to pay a LGS the transfer fee didn't really save me that much money in the long run. Especially if the seller is on Gunbroker...

      WV or PA for retirement?

I have a colleague who retired in WV but regrets it and said PA would have been better because, "Pennsylvania is one of only two states to exclude virtually every type of retirement income from taxation according to Kiplinger. Public and private pensions, railroad retirement benefits and all...

      Ruger Mini-14

I find I shoot my Mini as much as my ARs. Yes, Minis are indeed fun. I agree with everything that has already been said. It is enjoyable to own and shoot but ARs outperform it in many ways, mainly ergonomics, changing magazines and accuracy. I'd say the Mini is more tolerant of use and...

      Kudos to Criterion Barrels

I was working on an AR-15 build and spent weeks looking for a specific barrel before I came across it on Criterion Barrels’ website. It is a 16” HBAR, mid-length gas, chrome lined, parkerized finish, 1:8 twist, threaded muzzle, chambered in .223 Wylde. Normally they sell barrels through...

      Appleseed Maryland 2015 Thread

Thanks! I bought a bunch of targets from Fred's to practice. I also repeatedly watched old army training videos on YouTube and endured the mockery from my wife.

      Appleseed Maryland 2015 Thread

I went to my first Appleseed yesterday and had a great time. I learned a lot thanks to the excellent instructors and my shooting improved throughout the day as I applied their lessons and feedback. I earned my Rifleman patch, which was my New Year’s resolution after learning about the program...

      First handgun recommendations

I have a XDm in 9mm 4.5" and love it. I'll echo the comments that you should get what feels most comfortable in your hand. For me, that was the XDm. I like the grip, placement of levers and the cocking and chamber loaded indicators. I also like the lack of a safety to switch off or external...

Re: Garand vs Mini 14 vs SKS

Having both the Garand and the mini, I find I take the mini out more often than the Garand. The mini is easier to disassemble and clean, the ammo is cheaper and easier to find, it is a lighter and handier gun that can be easily modified by changing stocks/scopes, and I don't have to worry about...

fave shooting spots of Silver Spring'ers

I'm in SS inside the beltway and go to MSAR or Cresap. Cresap is a drive but there is no membership or commitments/hassles. I've always found it a well run range. The only problem is you either have to get there early and wait for them to open or wait in line for your turn at a lane.

      Long Eye Relief Scopes: .308

I'd probably lean toward the fixed length, only because the SOCOM is designed to be handy at shorter ranges and target acquisition is faster at the lower power. If you plan on doing a lot of target shooting from a bench or otherwise want greater magnification for more precise shots, then you...
