It used to be better bc you could mail the gun to them. Now you have to go through an FFL both ways. You can still go to the Ohio center in person though. Eley is about to open their version of the test center in Tennessee. Not sure if they'll let you mail it in or if you need to be present -

CZ 457, Bergara B14R, or....?
The MTR would be my choice of those three. It has a slightly different and tighter chamber which tends to lead to better accuracy. The AT one may have the same chamber, but I know the MTR has it. The varmint does not to my knowledge. -

I would recommend the cz 457 MTR with the longer barrel for having fun like you are saying and then eventually going to matches. It has a tighter chamber and all of them that I have seen are very accurate. The magazines are also a little more reliable... -

There were a couple of things happening, but the main thing was lack of attendance due to announcing it a little late. There will be other matches this year. Receiver for a 10/22 build
If you are starting a build from scratch, I would recommend the Kidd Supergrade receiver and barrel. It helps fix one of the weak points on the 10/22 receiver. For most PRS/MARS style matches, you will see 2+ moa target sizes. Typically you will see 3 moa between 100 to 180 ish yards. Range greater than 200yds
You can look up the ft Meade gun club calendars and they don't seem to open up range 1 (the 600 yard range). I have been watching their sites and just don't see it on there. Your best bet for an open range day is Delmarva or peacemaker on one of their open days. If your son has never shot... -

Long range 22 lr is a blast. If the wind is calm, 500 on a larger plate is pretty doable. Waiting for a calm day to try 600. Hoping that they start doing ELR matches after MARS/PRS matches more regularly at Mayberry and SPSS and a few other spots that can do it. -
