Do not rule out low end xbows too quickly. Of course, Ravin and TenPoint are nicer, but more expensive xbows are unnecessary to take deer. What is needed: scouting, proper set, and a steady aim. In my experience, most archery whitetail hunting is within 20 yards (especially in the early season)...

In all seriousness, all else equal, I would do the PM hunt, as it is easier to sneak in and setup quieter in sunlight.
My first encounter of the year was at dusk on a road alongside a creek. Copperhead. What was scary was that I nearly stepped right on it; their pattern works well in shadows / low-light.
Unless your kids have unusual self-control / restraint, I recommend waiting a few seasons. As we all know, hunting requires silence. In my experience, children are incapable of being quiet for more than two minutes, if you are lucky, and less if motionlessness is required. I re-learned this...
Is there a MD DNR reg regarding harvest sequencing of deer sex? For example, can I shoot two bucks back-to-back at the start of the season (with a bonus antlered tag or course) or are you required to take a certain amount of does after killing a buck?
