Maddie has expressed an interest in getting better and more comfortable with a shotgun, since she has her own 870. She was concerned that she wasn't able to get a good hold on it.
We went out this afternoon and we got her shooting. After about a half hour and a taco meat shoulder, she said she was ready to go home. She wasn't complaining, mind you, but she was getting a little hot and frustrated and she wanted to cut her losses before she got more aggravated.
We had a couple of shells left in one of the boxes and I told her lets try a couple of things before we leave. She agreed and we got her situated with ONE shell in the gun.
I asked her to let me look at how she was holding the shotgun. I instructed her to get "into it"..get her cheek against the gun and get it tucked in tight and to remember that she was in control of the gun, not the other way around. She did so and fired the shot.
"I didn't even feel that one." she said, "Maybe we can stay a little longer."
Before long, she was leaning into the gun, hitting paper targets and ripping bigger holes out of smaller holes. By the end of the session, she was calling herself "Shotgun Maddie".
She was shooting birdshot loads and told me she wants to shoot 00 buck the next time out. The only thing keeping us from doing it today was the fact that I forgot to bring them.
