I can't get the primers in my new cases. What should I do?

As you can see the inside of my Starline 45 colt brass primer pocket is .2055 and the OD of my CCI LPP are .2105

One seated and the other as the ram comes down on the primer arm and I push it in the primer will not go in. The ram will come down an 1/8" lower without the primer, I marked with a pen. I tried forcing it an the edge of a primer rolled a bit and the anvil popped out. :sad20:

    What do I do?

I'd say run a primer pocket reamer through them but you are new reloader and probably don't have one. The may be out of spec but, since you are using a flat caliper on a round hole, that may not be true. You can send them back to Starline or buy a primer pocket reamer. Here are the specs for primers and pockets.

FYI, I have found Starline's QC to be lacking over the years but, sometimes they are the only game in town. :sad20:

Have you used case lube on these cases?

Yes, i did, but its not helping the primer seat. BTW, lube on the case wouldn't matter trying to lower the ram on the primer arm. Only going into the dies. Even though they didn't have primers I used the decapping die to make sure they were sized evenly and I seated the first primer and 2 3 and 4 failed. I forced 5 and ruined it.

    [EDIT]
this guy said he talked to starline they they said to tumble BRAND NEW cases and that should remove the seating issues. Maybe I'll try this, what have I got to loose, but time.

that is some crap if true! i loaded up some 38 super in new starline cases and had no primer (nor any other) issues. ditto for .40.

i don't know jack about 45 colt but any chance it has a small primer option? i saw that with 6.5 creedmoor, they make brass with small and also with large primer pockets. i'm so new to reloading i don't even know the diameters of small v large primers.

I don't know, what I don't know. I have the left over 99 from the first pack tumbling with 2# of stainless media right now. I'll let it dry and we shall see.

My eye are not good enough and I am not experienced enough to know if the primer pockets are lipped or edges.

The are LPP pockets. I tried dropping a SPP in it and to just floated around and falls out.

I got a feeling they need swagged or reamed. I run a Bobby pin on the dryer left from washing my daughters clothes and almost feel a click when it exits the pocket. I bet they stamped stars and line and 45 colt after drilling the pockets and made a very light lip

sounds like a small burr on the edge of the primer pocket I bet if you run that primer pocket tool once in each case you'll be good to go

I have used a #3 Phillips head screwdriver to just lightly de-bur the edges of the primer pockets when I can't find my Lyman tool and it seems to work just fine.
    #2 for small primers

If the tumbler don't fix it that might be tomorrow morning before ordering a Lyman Reamer

Not to fault Starline, as it looks like very nice brass, but I think the primer pocket is burred on the edge.

I never use case lube on straight cases. I use carbide dies and never had a problem. I do only size as far down as needed to chamber and not all the way. I find the cases last longer this way.

I have not had cases wear out. They get lost first. :)

And I have pistol cases that have probably been loaded 10+ times.

Starline would be making this right IMO. Those pockets are right, or they aren't. But one good thing here---take John's advice and pick up the tools he mentioned. When you need them, you need them. They
will come in handy going forward.

Threw them in the wet tumbler and let the stainless pins abuse them for thirty minutes and the primers all seat now. One out of ten feels tight but the all seat

Well they look good that's for sure. Maybe it is as Bob said, that Starline has let there QC miss some things lately but I'm sure they are running at full speed rite now to keep up with demand. I just got a batch of 357 that I haven't started loading yet, I'll be sure to look them over more before I do.

Glad to see it worked out. I would guess a few light spins of a chamfer tool in the pocket might have helped. Pretty crappy of starline
