Going to Georgia hog hunting next month.

    I want to take my S&W 686+ (7-shot, .357 Mag) with a 4" barrel as a back-up.

I am looking for a nice OWB leather holster for it. If anyone has a recommendation, I would appreciate it.

Here's the gun I want to take:

I am far from a professional leather smith. Out of necessity I made my own holster for my 50 caliber S&W magnum research BFR. I made it in a hunting style which wears comfortably on a 2 inch belt. Made from oiled leather hand stitched with rivets in wear areas. I would offer to make one for you except I am tied up right now with several leather projects for family.

That looks great and I appreciate the thought. Pretty cool to have made your own.

I am on a little bit of a tight timeline - I was a last minute invitee on the trip. Probably gonna end up ordering the Galco recommended above or a DeSantis I like off Midway.

I'll give it until this evening to see if anyone recommends one that I haven't heard of before I decide.

    Thanks again!

I have the Bianchi Cyclone 111 for my 586 4 inch and the DeSantis thumb break scabbard for my 686+ 3 inch. Both are very nice.

Here's the gun I want to take:

Here is my recommendation. It holds the gun securely but allows easy access. Depending how you hunt, you may want a crossdraw and this holster can be switched from side to cross draw easily. Not cheap but worth the money.

Here is another very good holster dealer.

My son lives in GA retired there after 22 years in the Army. We did some hog hunting last year and I took down a 127 lb. hog with my 50 caliber S&W. If God is willing and the creek don't rise I will be heading to TX for some havalina hunting this year.

Your deciding factor will be what's in stock .

My default answer for virtually everything is leather pancakes .

For purely hunting , a lower riding crossdraw option is also a choice . ( As a crossdraw ) the Galco Dual Angle and Bianchi Cyclone 111 are similar other than strap vs thumb break .

These holsters are usually only made once a year for brief production run , so if in stock , now's a good time .

I appreciate all the input and advise.

    Ended up buying the DeSantis.

Seems like a quality piece, fits the gun well, rides on my hip nicely and I believe it will serve the purpose although it looks like the hog hunt will be delayed due to the recent weather, the boat work list and the USCG's inspection schedule.

    Thanks again for the help.

It's too late now but I'd recommend Circle Bar-t Leatherworks for any custom holsters, scabbards, or slings.

Marty makes some amazing stuff. I had him make a traditional oak leaf and acorn rifle sling for me. He still uses it as the home page photo. Page 3 in Gallery.
