I find glocks long in the grip. Can’t get hands around it in a consistent full fashion. Fine with two hands... feels like I don’t have a good purchase on it with one.

Point is... but the gun that fits YOU... not everyone else.

Glock 19. If you're looking for a Glock in .45 ACP, the 21 is what you want. BIG gun, just like the ammo it fires.

Consider the 34 or 17L if your focus is on target practice. 17/19 home defense, 26/43 concealed carry.

I have carried and shot Glocks from 9mm M17 and 19 to Gey 40 M22 and 27. There are guns with better ergonomics. If you are not totally sold on a Glock, I would check out Sigs 320 and 365 lines. They fit better and have better triggers out of the box. My .02.

hit a range that rents a variety of them and give them a call.

in 9, from small to large, glock has the 26, 19, 17 & 34 and them some in-between variants. for range and hd, the 34 is prob your best bet. longer sight radius (if using iron sights). the 17 is pretty much identical, exact same frame, with shorter slide and barrel. the 19 will have a little shorter frame, grip, slide and barrel. then 26 will likewise be shorter all around. grip circumference is identical for all four models.

going from version 3 to 4 you get more grip stippling and removable backstraps including beavertails. going from 4 to 5 you get a bit of a magwell and supposedly a better barrel and trigger.

again, try a bunch and see what works best for you. at the last gunshow, gen 4 g17's were going for $500 +/-. i think gen 5 had a slight premium $25-50. the 34s also have a premium ~$50.

another option - at least some don't like the glock grip angle. polymer80 makes frames that have a more vertical grip angle and take all glock parts (magazines, slides, etc). you can get them in 80% (that you have to drill and hog out some) and also 100%. so you'd get the frame, then a slide and upper and lower parts. all that could be oem glock or aftermarket. generally though, all put together, you won't be saving any money and might even be spending more depending on your options. it's really more if you want an 80% and/or a different grip angle.

I've owned my Glock 19 since the 80's. Never had fte, ftf, it is the best gun I own. The 19 is great for concealed carry, I use the 10 round mag,. There is also a large after market products for the Glock 19. Hope this helps.

I'll go against the grain here... consider the Glock 43X or 48. Smaller and thinner than a 19, but you can get 15 round metal mags that flush fit.
I had an issued G22 and bought an off-duty G19. I later bought an off-duty G43. I now have an issued G19 and am considering selling my personal G19 and buying either a 43X or 48. I find the thinner profile Glocks much more comfortable to carry.

    For target shooting?

Go rent/hold a couple diff. models and decide. Find a shop that has a bunch and go fondle them.

i would go somewhere to shoot as many 9mm pistols you can get your hands on. S&W, Glock, Walther, Springfield and Sig. I put together a spreadsheet with ammo I ran in each that compared model size, capacity, etc to make my decision. i ended up with the g19 which feels like 100 years ago. It comes down to what you feel best fits your hands and what you like. If you've done this already and settled on Glock, fantastic. If not, I highly recommend you step back and rent as many as you can to make the best educated decision. Are you set on 9mm? I've helped a few people with their first pistol purchase and they went .45 instead of 9mm. They both liked the bigger feel of the pistol and felt they handled the frame and perceived recoil better. If you haven't fired .45, I recommend you do that as well. And take notes as mentioned at the beginning of this response. Best of luck with your decision. You've received fantastic guidance from all the previous responses.

Glock 19 Gen 4 if you like the finger grooves. Gen 5 if you do not. Check them out and see how they feel in your hand. Also check out the 17, 43 or 48. If you plan on ever putting an optic on one, look at the Glock 19 MOS.

I am very happy with the G45, a 9mm handgun that fits perfect in anyone’s hand. It’s the best of the G17 and G19 combined into one!

    Thank you all very much!!
Really appreciate all the advice and insight. I was pretty much all set on making it a 9mm, but now looks like 45ACP might also be an option.
I will try both 9mm and 45acp at a range and make a decision, hopefully soon I will be able to post my pick!
    Thanks again
