I'm looking for a new scope for my Ruger 77/357 bolt gun. I would like something a little better than the Siimons scope that it currently wears. I'd like to keep it under $200 also. I only shoot paper at a max of 150 yds and more often at 50-100 yds. Older eyes so I do need a scope. Any suggestions?

I think a scope like the Burris, Leupold, Primary Arms, etc. 1x4 or 1x6 scopes made for use on an AR would fill the roll well. That rifle/cartridge doesn't need a 3x9x40 size scope.

The possible advantage of a 3-9x is that one can find them cheap. A decent Nikon can likely be found for under $150 on sale.

Our 77/357 carries a (now discontinued) Redfield 3-9x scope by Leupold. It was a good deal at the time and seems to aesthetically pair with the stainless rifle.

Your budget is under $200, the Vortex Optics Crossfire II 3-9X40 and 2-7X32 can be a good choice. For long-range hunting, then Arken Optics EP-4 4-16X50 and 6-24X50 will be great.

I would suggest a Leupold M8 x4 or x6 used on a secondhand markets. For the following reasons.

    1) With a little looking either scope is easily in your price range.

    2) The M8 line is most likely lighter and more compact than any of the others suggested. The M8 line is most likely lighter and more compact than any of the others suggested. Nothing throws off the balance of a carbine faster than a big scope.

    3)Leupold has a lifetime warranty.

    4) fixed power scopes will train you to estimate holdovers more quickly because your magnification is constant.

Just saying for a .357 magnum (PPC) rifle how often do you see yourself cranking the magnification ring? Just my opinion

I looked at the Leopolds that were in the same price range as the Nikons and Vortex scopes and was not impressed. Maybe the low end Leopolds don't have the same reputation as the more expensive ones. Not sure what the model number was but the Nikon and Vortex had clearer optics.

Ended up getting the Vortex Diamond back 4x12x40. I can always put it on another gun if it doesn't work out on the 77/357.

I really wanted the Leopold but the low end Leopolds do not appear to have any diopter adjustment so I could not get a clear view without glasses.

    Indeed.

I have a Browning A-Bolt .300wsm in stainless, as well as silver Leupold. Same visual presentation.
