Pic 1, outside of barrel, just in front of cylinder, looks like chunks missing? severe gouges?
Last pic, a bit blurry, but the forcing cone looks heavily eroded.
In addition to things mentioned above.
Pics may be deceiving, but personally, I think Jim's a bit high. I'd go maybe $500 tops, MAYBE. And only if I HAD to have it.

So the marks that looked like scratches everyone noticed was nothing. He used a rag and it wiped right off. He said it was some kind of dirt clumped together. The gap in the grips is from the screw being too long. He backed up the screw a little and the gap closed, so that takes care of 2 things. I'll have to check the pics again for the forcing cone erosion and the gouging you mentioned

I'm late to the party. I collect revolvers and the Model 66 is one of my favorites. Most of the comments are spot on. The magna grips are probably replacements, which hurts value. A factory grip screw is generally not "too long". Considering the box is gone and other possible issues, $700 is higher-end dealer pricing. You're better off being patient and looking locally at shops and shows. One of our IPs had a 4" 66-1 for sale a few months back for $450 with typical handling wear but otherwise in nice shape.

Better late than never. I've decided to wait. I have a couple other things on my plate that I'd like to get before this.

Thanks for all the input fellas!

Buying revolvers, especially, is best done in person unless it's a steal--which this one isn't.

The bright side: the hunt continues and THAT is its own form of happiness. See you at the next gun show.

Can you repost those photos? Too bad it didn't work out for you. I'd like to get an early 66 in pristine condition one of these days; they just aren't available.

The new Combat Magnums would be far more desirable if they weren't two-toned. Ugly.

I'd also like to see a re-pose of the pics, they dont show up on my older tablet.

It is a very rare thing when I see a pinned and recessed S&W at a local gun shop where I am, so at the price I would look it over really well. One for $450.00... verey likely sold on the spot.

Thanks for the pics. If it were me... at seven hundred dollars it is a firm 'nope'. There are many more examples out there that are in much nicer condition for the money. It is well worth your time to search out a nice model 66-1 simply because they're not being made anymore and they are such sweet shooters. Not to mention, they are quickly earning 'collectable' status and are still semi affordable.
