Back when David Dinkins was mayor of NYC there was a family visiting from the midwest and one of them was stabbed to death...it received national attention. Mayor Dinkins publicly stated attacks like that are why the nation needed increased gun control laws. There was a lot of face palms and "huh...what?" to him.

It just shows that the Left only thinks one way and isn't interested at all in facts and logic.

Categorical ban on assault knives. No knives should have a thing that goes up. Or Guards on it. What, you should protect your hand when using it? And all knives should be smart knives that only the owner can use. Locked up if there are kids in the house. Also people have to know when you are using it so they need a speaker built in so they make a very loud “swish” sound whenever you swing it.

And no more than one knife a month with a 14 days waiting period. And at least two character witnesses.

Too many people are allowed to travel armed in New York, and many of them have legs as well. Fatal attacks with bare hands and shod feet kill more people every year than all rifles and shotguns combined, yet New Yorkers are allowed to keep their feet and hands. It is time to ban limbs in New York, and, maybe, Los Angeles, too.

    Where's the KQL?
I know there are many first time buyers, how do they learn to use them safely?
Where do they learn 'Never point a knife at something you don't intend to cut', 'All knives are sharp until you can prove otherwise, even then they are still treated as sharp and dangerous', Never take a knife out of the block until you are ready to use it' Always make sure you don't sweep anyone with the point of your knife or wave it around as if brandishing it. Know what's beyond (behind) what you are cutting.
Finally, when using a knife for self defense remember; once the aggressor has stopped being a threat, stop stabbing! A corollary is, don't throw your knife at a previously threatening aggressor who is retreating, as that makes you the aggressor since no immediate threat to yourself or others still exists.
    I hope these reminders help.

Take a class on knife skills at your local culinary school where they have trained professionals and the proper accessories (cutting boards, aprons, and steels) to help you learn safe knife handling.
Of course, there is always the perennial discussion among knife knuts as to which is better stainless steel or high carbon knife blades and should you sharpen at home or have them professionally maintained (a dull knife is more dangerous than a sharp one). Which blade is sharper, one ground at a 15 degree angle or the 20 degree angle? What about ceramic knives, are they good for self defense or are they too brittle to be effective?

Last, they are available everywhere, hardware stores, kitchen supplies, online. They can even be shipped directly to your home without government approval. It's about time for ATFE to become ATFEK and start issuing FKL's!
Where are the serial numbers? How can we track them? When does a piece of sheet steel become a knife, is it when cut in the shape of a blade, when the handles are added, when it's finally sharpened? Can you make one at home for your own use? Having two edges of the blade sharpened makes it an assault knife and should be banned.
Are knives covered under 'Red Flag Laws"? If not, why not? :innocent0

actual people should be the only thing covered under any red flag laws. if someone is so dangerous or scary that we can't have them having guns (or knives or cars or gasoline etc) then they shouldn't be out in society where they have all kinds of tools at their disposal to hurt themselves and others.

ditto for felons etc. if we need background checks and other methods to dream and hope that will keep guns away from them, they really shouldn't be out in society. why do the 99% good citizens have to pay (time and expense and hassle of background checks) for the bad 1%? let 'em rot in friggin jail instead of allowing even a small chance of them committing even more violent acts.
