Plan on shooting my M1 a bit more than in the past, so I broke down and broke it down :) this weekend to grease. Disassembled, greased all the wear surfaces and as instructed in the Brownells video. Took me a bit longer than required to reassemble, because there were a couple details I missed on initial disassembly. Disassembled and reassembled 3 more times to be sure its etched into my brain.

Question: I placed grease on the portion of the op rod that is enclosed in the gas tube. Thinking that was a mistake? I can wipe it off if it isn't appropriate. I realize it's a lossy system, don't want to tighten it up more than design pressures.

While that isn't supposed to get greased, I don't think you've caused any lasting harm. The hot, high-pressure gas moving through the tube, and around the piston, will melt the grease and eject it into the barrel channel of your stock with a few shots. Worst case, the grease will retain soot from the propellant and make a mess. I doubt you're going to be coming ashore on an island with it, risking the grease retaining abrasive sand.
