Polish Mosins I've seen so often have those nice looking stocks.

Yeah, a lot of the people at the range erroneously berate me for stripping the shellac off....most of the Łucznik's just got an oil finish and stuck in storage after manufacture. They hit the market about as minty as a Mosin could possibly be.

    Barrel or muzzle?
I would not have jacked it up
I have several that have total worn out muzzles and bores that are left alone.

I shoot my rifles... if they don't shoot well, they are worthless (unless Simo Hayah or some other famous sniper owned it).

This was my first Mosin, yes, a 1934 Hex as someone noted. It's not rare, it's century import stamped, and although the chamber is passable the muzzle was trash. I was about minute of barn at 50 yards, seriously, it was that bad. Since I cut the barrel, yes, performance improved, but not to the level that I consider acceptable (on paper at 50 yards), but far more consistent. True that it was matching numbers throughout (barrel, receiver, mag, bolt, etc) but this was not a super high dollar or even remotely rare mosin, it was a $120 JG special.

So stop the crying... you can keep all the shot out non-performing rifles you want, but I like to shoot my rifles and I can't take them with me into the afterlife either. Just look at it this way, I just raised the value of all the collectible rifles that you refuse to molest sitting in your closet/safe/basement collecting dust.

It's not like I sporterized a Finnish M28/76 or Czech Vz.54, both of which I have. I even kept the M44 totally stock.

I might add, if you consider what I am doing "jacking up" a Mosin, then you must hate all the re-arsenal Mosins. every Finnish Mosin (especially the M28/76), and every variant that wasn't pure as the driven snow from the factory (which is most Mosin's). If you apply that logic to other C&R guns, you probably hate the Argentine FN-49's in .308, the CMP Garands in .308, and any other unpure modification of the original rifle.

PS - If you think this is cringeworthy, you don't even want to know what I am doing with my Ferrari.

Your gun, but be known that in this sub forum it is considered by most of the reputable collectors bad form to do what you did. In the rifle forum it would be more suited to get approval.

Not crying here. Like I said I would not have done it.

Probably the only "pretty" MN I have. The vast majority are not easy on the eyes. This is an arsenal refinished Finn M28, not something you run across often.

If the barrel is FUBAR it's basically a parts rifle.
Now it gets a second life.
How much is the 18" SS 1:9.5 barrel threaded 5/8-24 going to run ?

Around $165, I scored a deal on it (installed on the receiver and properly headspaced).

Mistake, it's actually a chromemoly barrel.

"7.62x39mm Heavy Gunsmith Edition Raw Unturned Blank, 24" x 1.375", 4140 CM, 1:9.5 twist, button rifled, thermo stress relieved, air gauged, .300 bore / .310 groove, muzzle stamp, ready to be turned on centers and profiled / machined to your customer's requirements."

I can handle the heat of criticism, and even the accusation of "poor form" by sporterizing them.

How do you feel about these "sporterized" Mosins? Let me guess, they should have been left alone despite the fact that they are clearly improved?

For many years mil surfs were sporterized. I can get int the mind of who Andy why they were done. Maybe to be made more functional for a hunter that needed to get meat for the family. Or maybe "because it could be done" .
Like many here in the C&R forum I am ok with anything that is temporarily done to a milsurp that can be undone and the firearm returned to original state. Examples are no drill scout mounts, bolt on no drill scope mounts like available for the K31. No I don't like sporterized milsurp a because in most cases it devalues the firearm less than what the person out into it.

I hope you are able to get it to shoot well because all but one Mosin I have seen this done to, they did not shoot well. The one I saw shoot well, he cut a 91/30 down to M38 length , put a target crown and scope mount. He got 1 1/2 MOA out of it @ 100 yards.

ATF has already said that replacing stick with plastic loses its C&R status

Yes, but specifically those two mosin's above in post 55, what do you think?

You are right, I could make it worse. Hopefully not, but we shall see.

I am not worried about the C&R status as I am not planning on selling it. I am well aware of the ATF rules regarding C&R weapons, but thanks for the reminder.

Replacing the stock and barrel are totally reversible. Putting the rock solid scope mount however, not entirely... Although visually, it could be mostly reversed and the ATF has held that scope mounts are fine.

I care not what anyone does with their own rifles. I might suggest you talk with others more versed in that type of weapon platform to make sure you aren't butchering something rare. In your case, you have that knowledge and determined your course of action.

I do want to speak to your comment above though. The two rifles you posted above are, "official" conversions. Thus have their own collection value. I have zero interest in the 28/76 as it doesn't fit my collection focus, but I'd LOVE to have a Vz like yours!!

    It's a trap....

    LMAO. You spoiled it.

Make me a reasonable offer on the little Vz.54 and it could be yours. FWIW, it's counterbored, which when I got it the seller neglected to mention, but otherwise very nice.

Sorry! But looks like you had some fun trolling with your first pic though :D

One of these days I'll scrounge enough cash for a Vz. They're out of my league price-wise.
