my best guess is ir/night vision.

If I remember correctly this started off as a salvaged action from a below rack grade rifle.
yes, it was a $100 rack grade mosin from JG Sales.

Yup, that looks like a X sight. I have the higher power one and a big IR light in same spot.

Yes, it is a first generation X sight. Although, I was tempted to use either the PN134 or Orion Z80 that I have. I think that the PN134 would have really been awesome on this rifle.

    3-12x, upgraded the illuminator.

    Nice looking "Deaths-head" :sarcasm:

I know a small amount about Mausers having owned a few, but I didn't know the deaths head stamp was a real thing.

Apparently the Ukrainians faked a lot of them before they were imported so finding a genuine rifle is difficult.

Interestingly enough, the Deathshead stamp was actually used. Only problem is, there's probably more rifles around today with the stamp than ever originally got it. I guess the fakers think it's easy to fool somebody with it, which unfortunately happens in many cases, especially with the ones Mitchell's Mausers stamped.

The few original Deathshead stamps I've seen were actually on the Gew 98 to K98k conversions, so while still uncommon, they seem to pop up on that variant frequently.

As for the rifle linked, I'm not good enough to say whether or not it's a fake, but one of the stamps looks a little funky to me. Most fakes look a lot like everybody's favorite halloween cereal....Frankenberry
