I've never owned a .25 but I think centerfire would trump rimfire.

For .25 ACP I always remember what Jeff Cooper said. He related he had been consulting for one of the 3 letter agencies and an operative asked about carrying a .25. He told this person, that if it made them feel better, then go ahead. But to not load it. Because if they loaded it, they might be tempted to shoot at someone, and if they did that, they might hit them. And that would make the person shot VERY mad. :D

I have not had issues with quality (CCI, Remington from the 70s) rimfire ammo. I did have a case of Federal American Eagle that would have a misfire out of every 25 or so rounds. But it was very accurate in my Mitchell High Standard.

One advantage of the NAA rounds is that bottleneck cartridges feed better than straight wall cases.

About 30 years ago a woman walked into a Houston police station and spoke to the desk Sergeant demanding her husbands arrest for shooting her. Multiple 22LR to the chest, died a few days later ( she was not a small woman ).

Actually the Cooper quote had one more phrase . * If they noticed * , they would get very mad .

My 1908 Vest Pocket is a great gun to shoot. It’s shockingly accurate. I have carried it with Hornady Critical Defense. Better than nothing.

If you can see down that narrow valley of a sight, they are indeed accurate. When I was a kid, I actually rested one and shot it at a 15 yard target and got about a 2 inch group. :party29:

Lol. I can still see pistol sights. It won’t be long before I won’t be able to. I can’t take out fine sutures anymore. 5-10 years and the 1908 will not be in my rotation (I’m 50).

The best shooting .25acp I've personally shot is a friend's 1948 Astra Hammerless . It was accurate enough to plink beverage cans at 10yds .

From the bench , my Bauer ( stainless clone of Baby Browning ) could keep within 9 ring of B27 @ 25yds .

For comparison , my former Raven would miss the paper @ 3yds .

I'd go with .22LR...with match ammo. Most of the complaints about reliability are with el-cheapo bulk pack .22 rounds. Match rounds from RWS, Eley, or Lapua are a very different affair. Those work.

I’d have to go with the .25 acp. Centerfire is more reliable. Also most of the ballistics charts you see are not fair. Most of the time the 22lr’s are shot from a longer barrel than the 25, making it look better on paper. Out of the same barrel length, is pretty much a tie.

The only advantage the .22 has is cheaper ammo, which means you can practice more. With a mouse gun you should practice a lot.

But a lot of them will not.

For SD, you need to have the ability to STOP them.

This is why I don't understand people wanting to use 22lr for SD. For all of that, just get one of those paintball pistols and use pepperballs in it. There's a reason police forces use 9mm or .40S&W. Why be inhuman about putting someone down?

Can't remember if it was Sig or HK messing around with something like that. .312 cal, 20mm, slight tapered case, pushes a 100gr about 1200fps, basically 9mm ballistics, but less recoil and 2-4 rounds more capacity in pistols

Sounds pretty awesome to me. Though I’d probably settle for slightly softer at around 1100fps unless the point is to run it in full size pistols. Then 1200-1300fps would be good.

Even quality non-match ammo like CCI MiniMags. I don't think I have ever had a misfire with CCI.

And in the past, Remington Golden Bullets were similar quality. But no so much these days.

I think the only misfires I’ve ever experienced in CCI ammo are related to my browning buckmark light striking the rims. Never had one fail to fire that I can think of in my 10/22. Maybe only half a dozen failures to feed or stovepipes with CCIs over the years in my 10/22. Buckmark needs a new mainspring or just a hair bit hogged out of the firing pin retaining hole.

Carry the gun you’ll enjoy practicing with. Don’t worry about caliber. If you practice with the gun and enjoy shooting it, that’s your best chance of of successfully using it, should that be necessary, in self defense. Sort out the practical issues of what you choose after you know what your choice is, and you haven’t confused the most important part of your decision.

We are drifting from the original questions a bit, but...

Never carried- but the LCP II in .22LR is a cool little gun and not bad to shoot either. Will be interesting to see if they do a Max variant on that one as a companion piece to the new LCP Max. 12 +1 of .380 is an awesome little package for a true pocket sized pistol.

I do carry in MD, and I do have a Ruger LCP II...in .380. I might buy the LCP II in .22LR for reasons already cited, but there is no question which version I would carry - it's the .380. I carry the LCP II .380 in the summer, as this tiny gun disappears under almost any clothing.

That said, this conversation can slide a slippery slope. I also have a SIG P365. The P365 is a very small gun, not much bigger than my Ruger LCP II .380 (~9mm Kruz), and it has a unique magazine that holds a ridiculous amount of 9mm in such a small firearm.

Forty years ago when I was a manager for a fast food restaurant chain I had a Beretta 950BS Jetfire in .25 ACP. When I was the closing manager I would keep in with me. I wasn't worried about stopping crime in the streets but if we were held up and being marched back into the walk-in refrigerator I figured I would have nothing to lose at that point (that exact thing happened to a Roy Rogers crew a few years earlier in NOVA). I knew having a pistol was against the rules and could have gotten me dismissed but I made that decision willingly.

I also knew to try and use something as effective as possible. I carried was was supposedly the best .25 ammunition available on the market at the time...the Winchester load with a BB in the nose which was allegedly to help the bullet expand. As it was, the restaurant was help up one night but I wasn't working...no one was hurt.

Later I bought some .25 ammunition since banned as it's supposed to penetrate body armor. I purchased it prior to the ban and still have it...can't sell or otherwise transfer it due to it being a violation so I guess it's just a curiosity now. Maybe I should simply shoot it up.
