I would pass the .410 over as also to small for effectiveness.

    Por que?

    You made me curious.

A quick look shows 000 buck as a common .410 load... which is either 4 or 5 .36" pellets at ~1000-1125 fps.

That's roughly equivalent to 4-5 rounds of .380+P, or higher per trigger pull.

Checking a few test videos, even a short barrel .410 is going to put all 5 in a pie sized target at inside-the-house distances.

Its not a 12 gauge, but it won't knock the elderly shooter down, and beats the crap out of .22 for effectiveness, simplicity, and reliability.

A lever or pump action .410 full of 000 might be ideal.

Don’t know if anyone else has said it yet (and don’t know a more tactful way to) but, at this stage in their lives, get em something that’ll ostensibly serve their purposes but also which you want and can use, when they don’t need it anymore.

Where do they live? I ask as, if in MD, well, do they have HQL’s? Because, MD … :puke:

I'm 65 and would recommend a Single Six for inexperienced seniors. Even though it's a single action there is little recoil and with a little practice is comfortable to use. Also, if they can handle a little more recoil they can step up to 22 mag.

From experience. .410 does not open up to pie size at 15 feet even with the minimum legal 18 inch barrel and open choke. Additionally, the penetration is poor and their is no expansion to speak off. A pump would be more reliable than a lever action but .410's do not operate as smooth as the larger gauges.

For those that don’t believe that 22 LR can be sufficient for SD/HD then checkout this test from LuckyGunner

“For .22 LR, we tested eight loads. The test guns were a Smith & Wesson 43 C snub nose revolver with a 1.9-inch barrel and a Ruger Mark IV semi-auto with a 4.4-inch barrel.” LG

Just look at the depth of penetration. 6 Hits of 22 will beat 1 Miss of 38 Spl.

To quote Bill Jordan, “Ballistics is Fine but Accuracy is Final” in any fight.

I use a Hi Point carbine to teach kids to shoot. Low recoil and reliable. 9mm ammo is relatively easy to get and, again relatively, cheap. Overall, reasonably priced and kept fed.

    Just a thought.

Holy heck that thing looks like fun.

This youtuber is annoying as crap at times, but still:

From the video: "My wrists always hurt, so who cares."

I would say that sums up the argument against any pistol for an elderly person that has never owned a gun.
