Yes...face-to-face is legal. You can write out a bill of sale but it's not required.
I always make a bill of sale serial number, and a copy of drivers license, just in case a firearm turns up somewhere it shouldn't. You can prove you were not the owner. You do not have to, though. You can not sell it to them if you have reason to believe they are a prohibited person.
