If you were really manly you put the butt of the gun against your crotch and pulled back on the slip ring with both hands until you sang an octave higher or the handguards came off.

I know this is not completely germaine to the topic, but it runs parallel

...I'm still trying to wrap my head around slathering a AR bolt in grease and then dipping it in motor oil. :lol2:

I prefer to slather my BCG in bacon grease then dip it in a nice, yellow mustard.

    Oh, sorry...Must be lunch time.:lol2:

They took my beloved A1 away from me right before Beirut and handed me an A2. I don't think I ever forgave the Corps for that. <sigh>

Oh, and no. No tool. Never heard of one, never saw one, never used one.

Did you you guys use a handguard removal tool to get the handgaurds off? When I was in, we had the M16A1 and those hangaurds were easy to take off compared to the new ones on my non free-floated AR's. Of course those old A1's had more mileage than the workers in the Red Light district. :innocent0 The delta ring springs were pretty loose.

Nope. Never heard of any tools for our rifles, outside of the cleaning kits. When I got to my unit, we had A1s. We got brand new A2s in 1990

My son had a question. For those deployed into Iraq or Afghanistan in the past decade, Did 5.56 ammo in the cans come loose or on 10 rd stripper clips w/ a spoon in the can?

It came on 10rnd stripper clips 30rnds to a cardboard box and was loaded 4 to 1 with a tracer every fifth round

4 30 round boxes to a bandaleer. Speed loader in there too. 10 rounds on each stripper clip. 1680 rounds to a wooden case which held two ammo cans.

My experience in 2012 and in training now.

5.56 has always come in 840 rounds per can, in bandoliers on stripper clips.

Originally 2 stripper clips per pocket of the bandolier. 7 pockets, 140 rounds per bandolier. 1 loading spoon pinned to each bandolier. 6 bandoliers per can.

Later they changed to the 30 rounds per pocket, 4 pockets per bandolier, 120 round per bandolier. 7 bandoliers per can.
