It only doesn't read well because people don't know math or firearms. 33 rounds divided by 2 officers means 16-17 rds each. With an AR-15 they most likely had 30rd mags, so they only used about a half mag. That tells you they weren't spraying ammo wildly. I'd say being able to end a gunfight and only needing half a mag isn't bad at all. It could have been better, but everyone went home safe and that's whats important.

    Sgt Preston here...

I truly believe that many of us on this forum could have done much better...

I wasn't there BUT I know even at age 68, I could have taken lots less shots & ended the confrontation sooner...

I can't/won't judge the actions of two officers who were in a parking lot at night with an armed and suicidal man. I wasn't there and his weapon wasn't pointed at me.

BINGO...not everyone is a great shot under calm conditions at in a gun welding suicide person at night in a low light situation, I bet its a little tougher.

I love the arm chair quarterbacks, funny honestly it is really funny to me.

I've seem people that are MOA shooters off a bench go hunting an miss a deer at 75 yards. I've seen people get buck fever and completely miss shots they have nailed over and over again because of the nerves/adrealine. That is just with bambi not shooting back imagine what your body goes through with stuff goes bad quick.

Most MD citizens outside of Baltimore City and PG county really like the police.

Trust me...no grand jury is going to head hunt officers in this shooting. Regardless of how many rounds were fired.

No innocent or good guys hurt? Mission accomplish.

They likely carry 3 handgun magazines and 3 rifle magazines.....I'd be okay if they used them all if they go home safely and no innocent people get hurt.

I know right were it happened no homes nearby backs up to a hill and a decent way on the other side of the road is the Fish Hatchery. Lots of commuters park there along with people that park there cars there to sell them.

Iron Peep sights at 1am on an AR15 are about worthless. Of course, you have to have fielded one at that time of night to be able to imagine it. It's not like the Army and Marines who can walk tracers full auto. Some Depts authorize CCOs but none provide them. So the average Joe has about Vietnam level technology on patrol. Hey, Sgt Preston, what was the USMC bullet to blood trail ratio in the RVN, something like a couple thousand rounds to one? Obviously you're a youngster that wasn't serving with a busted up A1 with 2 small apertures........but that's what the cops get these days.......50 year old surplus XM16E1s.

You kids and your gadgets. IR this, thermal that, and red dot everything. Get rid of that technology and you are shooting more or less blind.

    Sgt Preston here...

You are absolutely right, the job did get done...However...

My USMC background trained us to make 1 shot / 1 kill...

You had to stay still & take the incoming fire & make the shot...

Given the current political atmosphere, I don't think 33 shots reads well in most of the Socialists News Papers in MerryLand...

And Trial Lawyers & Grand Juries are lining up to depose the the LEO's involved...

I thought "one shot, one kill" was for snipers. Pretty sure this bumper sticker statement does not ring true for 98% of all shots from a Marine's rifle in combat.

Arm chair quarterbacking doesn't bode well for even the most experienced person in any field without having been in that person's shoes. Just sayin'.

One thing I can say, is I know how I train and what my job is. If I were to get into any situation that someone thought wasn't favorable or "they could have done better", well tell me to my face and I know what I could do well. Plant my size 10 into your nuts.

Time and place drives what happens. In the safe and secure world of after, it sounds bad. In the hard and right now world, it just is.

    Sgt Preston back again...

The "One Shot One Kill" philosophy was instilled in this old Jarhead by our Senior Officers & NCO's...

John Kennedy was President when I was in, so some things may have changed BUT...

They had been in Combat WW2 & Korea & had experienced logistical failures first hand = that is they had run OUT of AMMO on occasion...

So they tried to impress on us the need to make every shot count...

I still shoot that way today...

Your signature line says it better than I can write it:

"Speed is fine, but accuracy is final"...

    33 shots..?

I was in your shoes making the same points back in this thread about two officers in Manhatten who shot at one guy 84 times with two reloads each: http://www.mdshooters.com/showthread.php?t=81574 Doesn't seem to be much tolerance on this board for the suggestion that training should be improved such that we don't have dozens of stray rounds flying around a heavily populated city.

What's the "danger zone" for .223 rounds?

I know right were it happened no homes nearby backs up to a hill and a decent way on the other side of the road is the Fish Hatchery. Lots of commuters park there along with people that park there cars there to sell them.

How many shots went past the target?
