I am really enjoying black powder shooting. I ordered a Jim Kibler Southern Mountain Kit with extra fancy maple stock. It will be 2 to 3 months before delivery. I just built a traditions kit for "practice". It turned out pretty well except for the stock. They use trash wood, and it shows. I also tried a browning solution instead of blueing. It turned out very splotchy. I removed it and went with the blueing and that turned out great.

Is there anywhere local to Baltimore to get maple scraps for wood finishing experimentation. I ordered iron nitrate stain from Kibler.

Any suggestions before I start. This kit is $$$$ and I want to take my time and do it right.

These guys have a lot to choose from https://www.exoticlumber.com/
There are some "maple shorts" in the sale section that might serve your purpose.

If anyone is interested in wood-working at all, they absolutely NEED to visit their brick-and-mortar store just before the Bay Bridge on the Western Shore. I've lived within a couple miles of them for years, passing by the shop innumerable times until I just recently got into making handles for knives. It's a complete nirvana for people who are into different species of wood. They literally must have over a hundred different woods available, and many of them are available in small pieces for what you need.

That place is awesome. I could go broke very quickly in there.

I was watching a YouTube video of a guy who bought a Kibler kit and he asked for maple scraps sent with it to experiment with his finishes which Kibler supplied.

"Trash wood", you got that right!

My Lyman kit just needed tongue oil and it was GTG
My several Traditions kits needed a stain for sure!

My favorite part of kits were the application of Tongue oil on the stocks,
LEast favorite was removing mold partition marks on the metal then sanding/grinding the shape, then smoothening it out.
I spent a lot of time on the brass of my Traditions Enfield kit.
