-A friend contacted me for advice on a.22 target pistol. Me, I'm old school and love the older models like the Colt Woodsman MT and High Standards. One model I'd never owned is the classic S&W 41. So while on the search for something nice for my buddy I ran across an immaculate 41 in a PA auction. I emailed him with the link to it but no response. But I decide to bookmark it on the chance that an opportunity might arise to grab it for the right price.
-Fast forward to auction day. I'm sitting watching duck decoys sell in a MD auction, bored out of my skull. So I decide to look up the 41's lot on the cell phone and see that with 20 minutes left its stalled at $550. So I throw a cheap bid at it and 20 minutes later am shocked to see I got it for $100 under that.
-Lucky for me the SN points to a 1969 manuf. date so I can use my 03. The auction house did a fantastic job packing it and it arrived today in the original box with all the factory paperwork, including the warranty card and storage paper. Also included was a spare 5 1/2 barrel and 2nd magazine. Finish is perfect with not a scratch or worn edge. If it was shot it didn't get much range time.

Nice pistol at a hell of a price. Holy cow!

When talking 41s are they in general more valuable the older they are? Or does condition mean more than age? Maybe I scored a pair from a friend a little while back which are unfired. I believe they are late 80s early 90s guns

Man that's nice, just about as much a time capsule as you could hope for... plus the extra barrel and mag!

Very nice Mawkie - Congratulations on another great score!

A Model 41 was always a "wish list" gun for me and it seemed that every time I found one, I didn't have the spare cash and vice versa.

Indeed a time capsule. Found that this one was hard to photograph, just like early Colt pistols and revolvers with the high polish finish. Didn't do it justice, it's waaay nicer in the flesh. Shocked that I got it for so cheap.

    Where they send me.
Killer deal! I paid double that for one with just one upper recently (did have 4 mags though).

The old ones usually command about 3 times more than you paid, maybe 4-5 times with the box, 2nd upper and in that condition.

Did you get this at the Redding Auction? We put up my uncle's 41 with the spare slide there for auction. Would be awesome if it went to someone in the community.

Where did you get it? I sold one from the late 60's with 4 period correct mags a little while back. Just curious.

There is something about a numbering system that is inscribed on the inside of the upper. I am trying to remember what it was. A certain number meant it was a competition model and was more valuable.
I regretted selling it. But I had my eye on a newer shiny toy. As mentioned, the finish was gorgeous.

Not Redding. Funny thing is that I sold ten rifles with Redding that same weekend. I was in Harford county bidding on and getting a loooong time crush. A Winchester 52D US marked trainer. I pick that one up tomorrow.

That, my friend, is an incredible find at an incredible price.

I have a 41 of early 1980's vintage and it had some rather rough machining marks on some of the internals. From an appearance standpoint, it isn't Smith's finest work. Fortunately all of the external machining and finish are first rate, and when it comes down to business, mine is a real tackdriver.

What does yours look like inside when you take it down?

Clean and smooth interior. The 5" barrel is a bit rougher and the rear sight blade isn't serrated for anti glare like the longer 7" barrel. After reading about your later vintage 41 it makes me think this barrel was purchased well after '69.

    Thanks for the feedback.

When I get a chance I'll snap a few pics of my piece so we can compare notes. When you boil it all down, I am thrilled you have such a wonderful shooting iron. There is no way any of us can shoot out a .22LR piece. Enjoy the hell out of it!

-Auction house forgot to pack the Herrett target grips so after a call they were sent out. Amazing quality. A type of Herrett that I've never seen before. Scoured the 'net for photos to see comps but no luck. Amazing woodwork!
