Was at practice today and one of the team had his rifle suddenly 'decompress' ( i.e. all the air left the pressure tank) and it shot the CBI out and down range. Anyone experience anything like this? I'm thinking maybe a seal/o ring crapped out. Ideas?

What's the CBI? If it came out the barrel my guess would be the poppet gave out. They are made of delrin I believe. Simple to replace. It also could have been that he shot the pressure down too low allowing the hammer spring to overcome the pressure and not allowing the poppet to fully close.

Clear Barrel Indicator, like a empty chamber indicator or chamber flag. It's just a length of weed wacker line long enough to go from the chamber end to the muzzle and stick out both ends indicating the barrel is unobstructed e.g. empty and 'safe'

OK - so since it had to be cocked to have the CBI stick out the breech it could be either of my suggestions. IF the pressure was very low and the trigger got moved enough with the breech open to fire the gun it could have just been onyl that. IF not then my guess is the poppet gave way.

Did he try to fill the gun back up? If it doesn't take air it's the poppet. If it does take air then it was discharged at too low a pressure.

Pretty strange just going off by itself. If there is any air in the tank at all, the valve is held against the seat and can't open unless the hammer hits the valve stem. I have modified valves in my Crosman guns that have much lighter springs than stock and I have never seen such a thing. More than once I have touched off a round with the breech open and the pellet does go somewhat down range but nothing else happens.

The challenger uses a poppet that is very similar, if not identical to the MRod. Those have been know to shatter or break apart from use. If the poppet splits, it no longer holds air and the gun "fires" by itself.
