    I'd almost think, with the ping changing based on weight, that it could be spring twang you are hearing. Never heard of the ping changing based on the pellet weight. True ping comes from the air rushing thru the cylinder.

    To me this Hill design works pretty well and doesn't take up much room at all. You could actually 3D print one if you had a printer.

    Could be. I put a heavy spring in when I did the valve work.

    A guy made me two disks with an oring on each. You put one about 2/3rds of the way down and the other around a 3rd. The ping is a resonance from the air leaving than suddenly stopping exodus from the air reservoir. With the devices I put in they stop the pulse of that wave from resonating in the reservoir. I'd guess you lose about 1/100th of the air volume in the tank. I think as you shoot the gun the disks move ever so slightly to find the right place to be maximizing their effectiveness. I like mine, Choice if up to you.
