    ... A Star Model P that is...
They made a little over 11,000 of them but for some reason you don't see them very often. Chambered in .45ACP, from the side it looks identical to a Model A or B (9mm). From the business end the differences are more apparent :) This one is dated to 1948 and was issued to the Buenos Aires police.

West Germany bought a bunch of 9x19 Model B's after the war that are marked with LPN or other locale stamps. Many of them were from the last lot of pistols destined for German forces in July 1944 but didn't make it since the supply lines got cut. The Spanish Guardia Civil was what really started Star on its way with the 1920 contract, and there were several models/variations. The Model A (9x23 Largo) was the commercial version of the Guardia contract pistols and then became its own line. The B is just an A in 9x19.

Nice pick up. I don't know why, but my Stars tend to prefer steel cased ammo.
Probably because of the magazine. The steel case has more friction and helps keep the shorter 9x19 from sliding around. There's two 9x19 versions of the mag, one has a spacer (rare) and the other has longer lips (see pic). It's hard to tell between a 9x23 and 9x19 mag w/o the spacer since they aren't marked.

A bit of a unicorn, good find! I had a PD as my first carry piece when I got my carry permit back in early 1980. Nice and light but yikes it had a kick. Traded in on a Colt LW Commander which I adored.
