Been looking for a Pre 64 Model 70 Varmint, posted a WTB and a post in the what grail rifle thread. Pre64hunter gave me a lead to one over the line in PA, was able to make a deal and obtained a high condition 1958 in .243.
Metal finishes are 100%, these had stainless steel heavy barrels and are bead blasted withe a matte finish. Wood has better than average grain and normal safe and hunting dings, not bad for a 63 year old rifle. Rifle looks to have had little use, bore is excellent.
Came with a 12X Unertl Ultra Varmint scope, 2" objective lens that really is bright and clear, state of the art for its time and still high in demand today.
This is a retirement gift to myself, thanks for the lead Pre64hunter, much appreciated.

    Sweet!

You don't see many steel butt plate Varmints. You see many with recoil pads added for some odd reason. Less than 1% of pre 64 70's were varmints.
Nice deal, happy retirement, I hope you live long enough to wear that barrel out.
I'm always happy to look for model 70's. I wish I would have bought the ones I passed up.

If Carlos Hathcock had a varmint gun, this would be it. The rifle he used most in Vietnam, at least according to the book "Marine Sniper" and some of the other things I've read, was the Winchester model 70, wood stocked, and topped with a Unertl 8x scope.

Thanks for the comments guys, looking forward to getting it out and see what it will do, waiting on ammo and reloading components which are really hard to find right now.

Saw it and commented in the other thread. I'm fairly utilitarian in my tastes, but man alive I love that rifle. Absolutely beautiful... Kind of rifle i'd like to gift to my boy someday... Awesome find. Thanks for posting pics.

Damn - I just think that free floating scope is the cats ass. never even heard of such thing before, and I'm old.

I just love those scopes, never had one or used one but I will have one someday. Should a bought that Model 52.

Another beautiful rifle for your collection, congrats.

    Congrats...sweet gun.

Is the trigger aftermarket? It looks newer to me.

I assume the rails needed to be installed by a 'smith back in the day. I can't imagine Remington would have had pre-tapped for that front rail.
