Go to “DNR.Maryland.gov” pull up RockyGap. There’s what you want.

Are you tent camping or RV camping? If I remember, the electric is run in groups of 7, so that last outlet in the series tends to have low voltage issues (site 7, 14, 21, 28, etc.) We stayed there several years ago and the campground was great, but we were site 21 and constantly had low voltage and shut our AC off in the middle of summer. Our group had people on site 22 and 20, no issues with them. Called the ranger to come out, he said its a "known issue" and the "7 sites" have always had issues.

I'd go again, but not stay in a "7 site" if camping.

Enjoy the trip! The wife and I were just there yesterday meeting up for a picnic with family from Western PA that will be camping there in two weeks (they were on a route scouting mission). I was very surprised - great cell and data signal there. Not a great thing if trying to "get away".

I just googled it and they have casino resort/hotels and golfing. I don't gamble or golf...so it is hard just to hang out there.

If you get bored with cookouts and hiking the trails, take a not to far drive to Dunham’s Sports in Lavale. They (had) at one time a decent assortment of guns and accessories.

+ to this. Dunham's is a chain, but a good one. Can snag some good deals there. Particularly on holiday weekends.

Quite a few people from Western MD. What's your opinion of Fallingwater House to visit. I guess if I do that I may as well visit Pittsburgh.

I'd go with Pittsburgh with a day trip to falling water. The culinary factor alone is worth it for the 'burgh. Fireworks over the point are also not too bad if there over the 4th.

I was there today. Buy your tickets in advance as they sell out and the current group size is small. There is also an outside only self guided walking ticket.

Falling Water is a little over an hour from Rocky Gap/Cumberland area (68 to 219). Pittsburgh is easly another hour from there. Like someone else suggested there's lots to do in the Somerset PA area. Flight 93, 7 Springs Resort, Laural Mountain Parks/Forrest, Nemacolin, also some other Frank Lloyd Wright's homes. So you could easily spend a day in the area. Spend another day in Pittsburgh lots of things to do there depending on your preferences.

As far as the initial question about hiking , Rocky Gap is about 10 minutes away from Green Ridge SF , which has extensive trail network . ( And extensive camping , albeit semi- primative aka fire rings and picnic tables , but mostly w/o toilet facilities or water .)

As far as within 1-2 hours of Rocky Gap , that includes all of Western Md , and huge swaths of North Central WV , and Southwest and South Central PA .

Its a nice place. I was around long ago when it was first flooded, and have been back a number of times, as it has developed.
Hiking can be found for just about any level you want within a 30 minute drive or right at the resort for less challenging walks.
Rocky Trail Loop fit the bill for us last time. 5 miles ish
Tent area was nice, Garrett loop I think
I don't mind donating a few dollars gambling, now and again, but it was way to busy for me the only time I gave that a shot, just didn't get a good vibe.
Golf was nice, course a bit chewed up and greens had been recently aerated so it played perfectly for my skill set, I like beer too so... all good!

    Have a great time.

You should definitely consider getting AllTrails or similar for your phone. While it takes out all of the fun of possibly getting lost and an opportunity to teach your kids to learn how to use actual maps, they provide so much additional information on the trails through their descriptions, user feedback, ones to avoid if, for instance, a recent storm knocked down half the trees, etc.

Plus, you can tell any whiners along the way, see we're 1/2 way there, see, only 1/4 mile to go, see, just one more hill then it's flat. It's also a great way of finding other trails in the area, be it US, MD, VA, WV, or PA parks and trails that would otherwise require a lot of research to discover.

I bought the subscription to AllTrails since some of the limitations were annoying, but only after years of using the free version and finally realizing we'd definitely get our money's worth.
