I always get delayed and forget to do anything about it. This time I didn't forget. I was delayed in July, waited my thirty days, and sent in my appeal to find out why. They report no record of the delay on my NTN number. ok, maybe somehow the number was wrong, but what gives? Did it get approved and the record deleted? I know I was delayed because I had to wait three days for the rifle to be released. What should my next step be? Try calling the numbers listed online? Anything specific I should say?

    thanks,
    Dave

There's a specific number you can obtain....I forget what it's called. It's written on the forms. I'm drawing a super blank. It's for people with super common names like me.

I get delayed but usually only for a few hours. The lady at the gun shop says it's due to my security clearance. I don't know about that but she says it happens. I usually just wait, but it's never been more than a couple hours.

My name (James Smith) has NEVER gotten me delayed. I usually go to the "further review" department, but I get my answer within 10 minutes. As long as this continues, I see no reason for UPIN. However I haven't bought anything during typical Gun Show hours, it hasn't been a problem. I bet if I went to a gun show and bought something, I wouldn't want to make a bet as to how long it may take.

The more files you have, i.e. BI, Clearance, Court Orders etc., the longer it takes for the computer to search. That is why the FBI keeps upgrading the system although it is never enough. Whenever you get put on delay, ask to speak to a supervisor and explain if you are one of the people that has many files. I'm my experience, they take a look and clear you while you are on the phone.

You guys with the all BOLO files, probably shouldn't stay on the phone long.

This. Happens to me anytime I'm in the process of renewing my clearance or carry permit. It's because it shows in the system as an open investigation.

I used to get delayed and further reviewed all the time, one day I looked on MD Case Search and found someone with the same first and last name (different middle name) and our birthdays are about 3 months apart (same year). This idiot had pages of felonies. I always assumed this was the cause of my problems. However the last several times I sailed through with no problem.

This is why I'm glad I have a completely unique name...

me.....not so much... Although there is some good to be had in anonymity of numbers. Do a google search on my name and a million other RR's pop up. You've got to know pretty specific things about me to zero in. Never got delayed though, so I'm glad people with my name have largely stayed out of trouble.

OP, have you gone back to pull up your 4473 and see if they ever got the "approved" and when that was? typically the FFL would get a call/fax with the go ahead some time.

I used to think I had a unique last name... until we moved to MD. Must be some lost colony of forgotten relatives perhaps. At any rate one is a real ass clown with all types of court records. But I have so far not had any delays on purchases. Knock wood.

The NICS system is automated database checks of different government agencies. If one of those databases is offline or doesn't respond in a timely manner, you could get delayed. It's not that your records match someone else's, just that the system could not finish its checks properly. With as complicated as the system is, I'm surprised it works at all... LOL

Criminals tend to lie when they get arrested (go figure) and sometime give fake names and dates of birth to avoid warrant checks. With all the people getting arrested in this country, I'm surprised everybody doesn't match someone else... LOL

We've also noticed (but can't prove it) that some people always get instant "proceeds" and other always get "delays".

There have been posts on other forums about NICS appeals being suspended. I don't know the current status.
From the linked FBI NICS appeals page...

The NICS Section’s Appeal Services Team is currently processing appeal cases received in June 2015 and Voluntary Appeal File (VAF) cases received in January 2015.

jesus lol. not looking good for me getting this resolved. I doubt it's a system down issue, as I'm 3/3 for getting a three day delay. very un-common name, so that's not it. no disqualifying info should be in my record. I will try calling in next tomorrow possibly.

It is the Voluntary Appeal File (VAF) that you want to do to get a UPIN.
