I’ve been wanting to buy a Hinderer knife for a while. Well the wait is over. These are really well made. I can finally see and feel why they are so respected in the industry.

I love Mr. Hinderer's knives, and a pic thread of his creations is a worthy addition to MDS.

My Firetac XL with blue anodized Ti.

Well now I want to go back and take better photos. That’s a beautiful knife BTW.

So the Half-Trak has become my EDC. I have this habit if opening and closing my knife in my right hand while driving. I might be snapping the blade open and closed 500 times a day while driving back and forth from job sites.

I noticed when I first got it that the blade lock would seem to really stick and occasionally make it impossible to unlock the blade with one hand. I figured that the edge of the lock was just a little rough from the EDM wire cutting operation, and that it would smooth itself out over time. Well it’s been a few weeks and probably several thousand opening and closing cycles and it hasn’t gotten better.

Today it really got stuck once I decided to investigate a little further. I looked a little closer at the lock and it sure was pretty rough on the face where it presses agains the blade while locked. The flat spot on the blade side was pretty scratched up too. So I took the knife apart and used a fine stone to break the edges where the two metal parts engage. Then I smoothed and polished the blade locking tab from 240 to 3000 grit. The handle tab was a bit tougher to polish so I just got that side to 800 grit.

Added a light dusting of moly to the bearings and put it all back together. Works silky smooth now.
