Hi all, “I” am building an AR-15 pistol for my girlfriend. 11.5” barrel, 12” handguard. Looking for the shortest possible blast diffuser out there to sit flush with handguard or extend as little as possible. Going for a similar look to my rifle.

figure it should have a thread shoulder at about 11", 12" handguards usually measure 12.5", so a flash can/linear comp that is 1.5" OAL should be flush. The short KAK flash can, Ultradyne Athena, and Zeroed linear comp are all about 1.75"

Just keep in mind, the shorter the device, the less volume to perform the job it's supposed to do. I like the Kaw Valley linear comp devices, though mine is on an AR9 SBR and not a .223.

For around $35, you could give the Midwest Inds. Blast Diverter. I believe they come in around 1.75" long.

The Kaw Valley Precision Linear Comp. At just over 2" in length and priced just under $60

Speaking of effective blast diverters, i've been wanting to check this out.

Not a suppressor but gives you better sound attenuation than most traditional muzzle devices.

Def doesn't fall into the "short muzzle device" category though.

Do you think it is $175 worth of interesting? :innocent0

Well, yes and no. I have Surefire SOCOM brakes on most of my 5.56/.223 rifles. They're decent brakes and cost $125-$140 depending on who you buy them from. I use them in conjunction with my SOCOM can. If I wanted to add a Surefire diffuser to the mix(because unsuppressed brakes suck for the people next to you), I'd have to drop another $225 for one that mounts to my SF brake. Now you're talking real money.

Now, for $175, a person who wants a brake, but doesn't want to be that guy on the range, he can simply screw the shield over his brake. I like the design because it is almost a suppressor. It applies some of the same principals of a suppressor, less the end cap(and volume). I am curious to see how well it tames muzzle blast. I don't think it really has a place with short barrels though, because you will probably never want to remove the outer shield and there are plenty of more affordable options out there.

In the end, for me, I don't see one in my future. I don't have a need for something like that at this time. But it is an interesting design.

I'm glad you explained that to me as now it makes sense.
