Finally had a chance to shoot the Auto Ordnance .30 cal carbine I bought awhile back.

I bought it on a whim without doing much research only to learn later a lot of folks had problems with them.

Ran 100 rounds through used USGI mags with four mis-feeds. 3 of the 4 Mis-feeds came when using a KI marked mag with a noticeably weak spring.

I then unwrapped two NOS USGI MAGS, a UQ and a KI that were still in the wax paper from the 1950’s. With these never before used USGI mags I had 100% reliability.

I can’t give specifics as to the accuracy. I was shooting at beer cans floating in Dad’s pond. It was accurate enough to sink the cans at 20-40 yards.

Overall, I guess I got lucky and got a good one from Auto Ordnance.

Pictures are the 1950 mags and the AO carbine along with my 1943 Inland Bavarian Rural Police carbine.

I hope it continues to serve you well. Certainly a pretty carbine.

Always wanted one of those - timing doesn't seem to work out.

OP - those look like nice rifles! Glad you got the mag issue fixed. If you could post a video of a future range day with them, I can live vicariously through you! LOL

the first M1 I bought was an auto ordinance and they are 99% interchanable with USGI and are made to USGI SPECS - in fact the first m2 conversion kit I purchased in 1979 I put in my Auto Ordinance and It fired 17 rounds per sec! Still have it to this day!

Not to take issue with your post, sir, but I’d heard that only the Fulton Armory carbines are interchangeable with and use some GI parts…I have no personal, first hand knowledge, but would sure welcome any insight.
Reason being I love my GI carbines, but they are simply too nice to ding up in the field…a new “real” carbine would be a welcome substitute. I guess I could always get an old mix-master shooter, but seems like a new rifle would lay less guilt on myself.

The fact that nobody ever made these reliably in either .357 or 9mm is hard to believe.
My Garand was rebarreled in .308 so stands to reason somebody may have tried to mod one at some point

If it all it would take is a new barrel I’d be in

Was the 9mm Chiappa not reliable?
I don't know. I have never owned a Chiappa but the ones I've handled have never left me impressed. Yes, that's an opinion based on no direct experience with this product so I may be wrong.

I don't know either, but if anyone wants a M1 carbine in 9mm, here's some. Looks like they come with a 10rd mag, and you may be able to buy (out of state) higher capacity mags.

In 2015 they had issues, so be forewarned. I HOPE they fixed the issues. But IF one should buy a 9mm M1 by Chiappa, KEEP YOUR RECEIPT, and shoot is asap to test it to make sure it works. Chiappa has a 1 year warranty and you need to dot all your i's and cross all your t's to claim warranty. I dealt with a CHiappa warranty issue, and they resolved it, but much more to have to deal with than any other manufacturer.

For .357 is doesn't surprised me. As far as I know, Coonan is the only guy who has made a reliable .357 autoloader. Even the baby DE in .357 isn't all that perfect (but, good enough so long as I don't need to rely on it for self defense).

You might be able to design a magazine that would feed .357 reliably, but it would have to be single stack. I am not sure that the bolt is large enough on the carbine to be able to run an extractor that could lip the rim.

You'd probably run in to issues getting it to run reliably. 30 carbine is between 9mm and .357 in max pressure, but if you look at actual pressures of cartridges, 9mm and 357 are all over the place in terms of both peak pressures and powder burn rate. The 30 carbine Mil Spec loads, and near as I can tell all of the commercial loaders keep reasonably close, spec'd basically H110 powder and IIRC 14.5 grains is what it works out to. You don't see a whole ton of variation from this in terms of velocity for different manufacturers. A fairly tight band of around 100fps from the faster guys to the slower guys and I'd bet that the powder used has a similar burn rate across them.

9mm just 115 gr loads can vary a LOT no matter what the box says. 1050 up to around 1200fps, which is a much larger energy difference. .357 is pretty similarly wide range.

Probably doable, but .357 would be a nightmare tasks.

While the Chiappa sounds great, I would rather have an AR style 9mm personally, especially with a radial delayed blowback option available. I assmbled a 9mm AR style rifle and while I did have punctured primers until I got a new firing pin, it always always always always cycles. Never an FTF or FTE. Also takes Glock mags.

Say, didn't you also get a Fulton Armory M1 Carbine? Probably the best money can buy but they ain't cheap.

Iver Johnson made a few true gas-operated M1 Carbines in 9x19. I've never seen one, but recall reading that they used modified P-35 Browning mags.
