Four of these bird walked across our yard yesterday and at least one is hanging around. My wife has identified them as Chukars, but they are not native here. Does anyone know where these birds might have come from?

Our property is forested, but adjacent to an open field, located about 10 miles south of Chesapeake City.

They are release (planted) sometimes in quite large numbers during dog training, filed trials, and hunt tests. And many people will pay an operation to salt a field with them from penned stock so they can just go have some hunting time with their dog.

In all of the above situation, it’s not unusual to have some escapees. They covey up like quail.

    Easily breasted and tasty eating!

I’ve hunted them several times at Caroline County Shooting Preserve. I’m sure they have some escape... (and I’m sure they can’t be the only type of establishment like that)

You may have a released bird hunting operation somewhere near you, keep an eye out for pheasants too as some of them may have escaped as well.

Hopkins game farm in Kennedyville used to do released chukar. For as many years as they did it, I'm sure some got away every year and might have formed a viable wild population in the area.
