    Behind enemy lines...
I’ve been thinking of picking up a Remington 7400 in 30.06. Would appreciate any thoughts or opinions. Pros/cons? Use would be for hunting and punching paper now and again. Tks.

I have one and like it.

With practice, minute of deer is no problem to 300. Just 150 corelok.

Never tried much more than that.

It's not a precision rifle, just a good Hunter. I not a precision shooter either. Just a Hunter.

I bought used, I think it's early 00's production, plastic furniture.

Had one and sold it years ago. i wasnt a fan of the minute of deer accuracy.

If your looking for a mag fed, semi auto deer gun, then you should be looking at an AR in 6.5 or 6.8

I second this. My father has had one since the 70’s. Back then those older ones were the 742 (semi auto) and 762 (pump). Very pretty blueing, basket weave checkering, 200 yd deadly accurate, detachable magazine, just a great gun. He’s taken tons of deer with it, I’ve shot it a bunch too and fully enjoyed it.

From Dad’s experience he tells me to go with the .308 or another short-action caliber. The long-action .30-06 tended to have issues with FTE due to the longer travel, back in the day. Maybe they fixed that along the way, I’m not sure (again, Dad’s opinion & experience- I have zero knowledge on the matter). Good luck though, I think you’ll like it.

I had a 742 in 30-06, that I sold years ago. it was fine for minute of deer, but after 3 quick shots, it was only good for minute of barn door.
I still have a 762, in 30-06 that I hunt with on occasion.

My Dad has a 760 pump.

I worked up a load using Speer 165 grain Grad]nd Slam bullets and IMR 4350 that would shoot less than 1" at 100 yards
