Looking for a dedicated sporting clays semi auto. Looking to upgrade from the Remington 1187. Have narrowed my choices to the Beretta A400 Xcel sporting black and the Benelli Supersport. Both guns have great reviews, any pros or cons to either one? I’m leaning more towards the Beretta

The beretta is a gas gun so it will have a little less recoil then the benelli. That being said, I have a Cordoba which is a matte hunting version of the supersport and it's a great reliable gun. The only problem I have ever had with it was it was part of the bad batch of stocks from years ago that the coating got sticky on, but Benelli replaced it no questions asked.

I shoot a Beretta DT-10, and offer nothing other than anecdotal observations.

Shooting NSCA shoots you will see A400s outnumber any other semi auto at least by 10:1. I have shot both and they are each great guns that afford opportunity for adjustments to fit you well. Pick whichever you like the most.

I’m not really sure what the Beretta will get you over the Remington except maybe some adjustability. If you’re going to buy a new A400 give it a lot of thought because you could get one of these for not that much more money. If that’s too much of a stretch buy a used Beretta 68x series gun. 686, 687, 682. Or a Browning if you like how they feel.

I own 2 Benellis (the original ‘Sport’ I picked up with a factory cert. after completing B’s armorer’s course way back in the 80’s,90’s; and, a SuperSport).

I probably shoot sporting with that SuperSport best of any gun I own (lots of semis, ou’s, SxS and pumps) but, I’ll be honest with ya; it is hard to describe the rage I can feel - just for a fleeting second - every time I get that g*d d*mn “Benelli click” Doesn’t happen often with factory new stuff but, when it does with factory new, it’s in that SuperSport. (Had a ton of those dang “Benelli click” issues with reloads until I discovered it was the Fiocchi 616 primers a buddy and I went in on a pallet of. Switched to RIO primers and that was the end of that.

Point being, ya ain’t never gonna get that dreaded “Benelli click” in a Beretta. Funny thing is, I don’t own a single Beretta semi but the wife does. Her 390 is her favorite shotgun of several and she can shoot that thing all dang day and from what I understand there is even less recoil w the 400’s.

I’d have to go with the Beretta ...

Best of success whichever you choose (tough to shoot a semi after Easter and before Thanksgiving down here cuz, picking up shells outta the grass and underbrush is THE BEST away to meet copperheads ‘round these parts, between frost seasons!

I am jonsing some kinda awful for a DT-10 and am torn between that or a Perazzi. Primary use would be sporting ... I shoulda got this itch before I moved away from Joel Etchen’s ...

Good point about A400’s outnumbering other semis ...

My wife has enjoyed sporting clays as well and likes the Remington so I’m making a sacrifice and getting a new gun for myself

I’ve had an o/u and just prefer the semi auto

The only other problem is finding the A400 xcel black(not a fan of the blue) plenty of benellis available

Gas guns require more maintenance versus recoil operated shotguns. I have run over 1,000 shells (mix of Rio, Winchester, Federal, and Fiocci) through my Benelli M2 without cleaning and it's still going. I have to clean my Beretta 391 after running Winchester white box ammunition due to how dirty it is. One other thing to note, I've tried light AA shells out of my Benelli, it wouldn't cycle. No problem with either of my Berettas or my Brownings. Have you tried both shotguns? Not just mounting, but actually shooting them? I think that's a better test than asking us.

My experience with the A400 is that the gas system is a pain in the ass to clean right. For people who only hunt a couple times a year, the partial cleaning they do will last until it finally gets too carboned up.

However, if you shoot a lot, you need to dissasemble the gas system much more than the 1100 or 1187 if you want to keep it working. The recoil reducing stock does work but don't damage it. Beretta will not sell parts for it, only the whole assembly. I can't recommend this shotgun.

My buddy owns several ASE90’s (the predecessor to the DT10) and a DT11. I love the lockup on them. They feel like a vault closing. I think Beretta’s ASE90, DT 10 and 11’s are under appreciated. I would love a Krieghoff or DT11. Nothing wrong with a Perazzi but they just don’t feel as good as the others to me. Some of it is because they’re lighter. I shoot a pretty heavy gun in Skeet at 10lbs 10oz. Sporting guns aren’t usually that heavy.

I’ve stayed away from the foreign primers due to several issues with them.

Regarding Joel Etchen’s. You know he can ship a gun to your local FFL!

    Thanks,
Didn’t realize how difficult the Beretta gas system was to clean, I’ll look into that. The beauty of the Benelli is how clean they run.

try one if you can. I shoot 1100's and 1187's and they fit me really well. I have owned and sold 4 Beretta semi autos and I cant shoot them well for some reason. I am sure I could get used to them but why...
The only real issue with the 1187 is the rubber O ring, just keep a spare in your bag and you are good to go.
I do own a Beretta side by side and like that

An ASE90 is on the short list to become a safe queen. I currently have a 682 Gold (Greystone receiver), 692, DT10L, and A400.

Sorry, you are right, it was the 391 that I had horrible issues with the gas path. The A400 I had issues trying to replace parts of the stock. :o

Was it the kickoff system that gave you issues? I don’t have a bunch of experience with it but haven’t liked what I’ve seen. A lot of people have been having issues with Beretta’s adjustable comb hardware. Not the shims that the A400 uses but the ones with the cutout comb. The aftermarket ones are much better. They have ones that replace the factory hardware.
