My grandfather and grandmother were big into mushroom hunting in Kansas all of thier lives and it used to be a family outing event to go out and hunt for morels. My dad misses it and does get out sometimes but I have never really done it much intentionally. I guess I am never used to having extra time this time of year with the kids baseball and soccer.

We went on a 3 mile hike on Saturday and I stumbled on two small ones and showed the family and put them in my pocket. Ate them last night and thought they were really good for a non mushroom guy. Tired of sitting at the desk all day I went out for a stroll and found 20 in about 15 minutes. Came home and got my youngest and we found 75 in 45 minutes. He had a blast.

My dad is coming up tomorrow afternoon hoping that there are some left. I have to look into ways to eat them other than my grandmothers secret recipe.........
Soak in water (with a little salt) for 12 hours, halve, dip in milk, toss in flour with a little S&P and fry in butter and then plate them up.

I will have to look into freezing them or dehydrating them as well since my boys will probably have the forest picked clean!

A friend of mine who grew up in Kansas showed me a video yesterday of a friend of his back home who had a friggin' mother load of morels. Apparently the rain and weather has just been spot on.

Good to see you carrying on the family tradition.
    Junior looks happy!

Why aren’t morels sold in grocery stores (or do you have to go someplace fancy)?

Nice finds! Only found about a dozen so far myself. I've heard that the young helpers have an easier time finding them since the eyeballs are closer to the deck :)

There were some that he simply trampled playing hot and cold, then there were some that really surprised me when he found them. I really couldn’t believe how much he enjoyed the hunt.

He did say that my eyes are old.

I found a few throughout a couple hundred acres of forest while scouting for deer over the past few weeks - wish I found more but wasn't strictly looking for them. Anyone know if a "greyer" morels is still edible? I found mostly typical yellow ones, but one grey one which I wasn't sure about - maybe just older?

Pretty sure that all morels are safe to eat. They do have different colors from Yellow, grey, brown. My dad likes the darker ones the best and I think they are just older. I have some darker colored ones in my pile and the grey and darker brown ones are firmer and I am guessing had popped earlier. This afternoon I will try to investigate further but there were a few of the yellowish ones that were more moist and I believe that they must have just come out.

Dad came up this afternoon and we went out with the boys. This was our bag and my dad’s was a bit heavier.
