Some of these rifles get more interesting the more you study them.
When looking at the receivers there are subtle differences to final exterior machining/ finishing.

Here you can see a close up of the 7th rnd. mod, differences in the sidewall where the elevation knob is, Op rod track milling and dismount area and reciever top left sidewall or forging lug area.

H&R receivers have this area significantly different by being ground down and polished off to a higher degree.
Lastly there was a follow up web picture of a wider guide rib that was configured on certain receivers that came into production after the 7th round fix was implemented.
Im not sure of the total number of drawing number changes and machine differences for the whole period of production for the M1 rifles but it was more than a few.

I also think its unusual that the problem with the 7th tooling interference wasn't observed by someone during the manufacturing process. I cant say if there was a certain amount of automation involved during the machine process or maybe the area wasn't able to be directly observed when the operation was performed so it was easily missed by the worker.
Metal all in the white, cooling fluid flying all over the place, trying to get them built- who knows. They figured it out in the end is all that matters.

John Garand was a genius...he not only designed the M1 he also designed the tooling to build it with. Some at the time said the rifle couldn't be efficiently or economically produced...he proved them all wrong. It turns out the the 7th round stoppage issue...as well as other minor problems that arose...came from Springfield Armory production people deviating from his design specifications.

John Garand is truly an unsung hero in our history. He may not have carried his rifle in the service...but those who did won the war with it.

He was a special kind of genius. Hard day at the workshop/office...he'd go ice skating to clear his mind...at the ice rink he built in his living room at home.

He built it by opening the doors and windows during freezing weather and spread water and let it freeze. Geniuses are often strange and even child-like in other areas.
