It is official. We have lost Ft. Meade as a venue to shoot across the course matches, including the state championship and mid range championship.:sad20:

Those who run the matches are now looking toward the possibility of using the range in Bridgeville, Del. for these events.

Remember, Department of Interior now is the owner, Army/NSA leases the ranges. DOI is trying very hard to eliminate the "historical uses" part of the deal.

Does anyone get to shoot there or is it completely closed?

I can not speak for the Meade Rod & Gun Club.
The information I have came in an e-mail from Larry M.
He says that they have to remove all of the equipment we use for the matches and that the range is no longer available for the across the course matches that have been held there for as long as I can remember.

MRPC has recently undergone similar struggles.....Do not forget your club is one of 4 clubs grandfathered access by written agreement years ago....Dig out the old documents and stand up.

BTW we are not allowed to store equipment any more either.

I didn't know there was any sort of written agreement. Which 4 clubs?

Interesting. I would have thought Chesapeake would have been one of them because they sponsored the matches for many years.
My information about not using the range came from Larry with the MSRPA.

I can't imagine Chesapeake not being one of these 4 either. Haven't they sponsored these matches for decades?

It's a shame what's going on with these matches. Like a slap in the face to gun owners and shooters. Like the state just doesn't want us or the guns, as a culture, here.

When I lived in South Carolina in the late 80s and early 90s, you couldn't throw a rock without hitting an IPSC or USPSA match. Pick any weekend and you could shoot steel, bowling pins, or paper til your heart's content.

Hope you guys are able to find new places to hold your matches.

I don't know of any other range in Maryland that is capable of holding these matches.

I'm a member of MRGC and just got back from tonights meeting. You are correct that the clubs (or any other civilian entity) can no longer store equipment, target frames, ect on post.

While the range facilities are not closed to the club all visitors must follow the standard base visitation procedure. Name, DOB and city of birth of all proposed club members who plan to attend club shooting events must be submitted in writing the 72 hrs before the scheduled range visit.

Since these new access procedures make it so difficult to coordinate larger groups or (open groups), events like Appleseed, youth shooting programs and I assume CMP events are choosing other venues.

However next year's schedule is not yet posted. It should come out soon. If the matches are allowed, I'm sure they would be posted on the 2017 schedule.

Lets hope the shoots will continue. I hope they can work something out that will maintain this range for our use. Maybe it's just a Homeland Security issue with storing non-government items at the range.

Well that's a bummer. I really enjoyed the Appleseed shoot at Ft. Meade last November, but they had to cancel it last month because of the situation there.

With the decline in the number of participants, the additional requirements may well have been the nail in the coffin for those who run the course matches. :sad20:

Does the Swiss embassy still shoot there? We used to let their personnel use our range to keep current. In return, they allowed us to shoot in their qualifications (and gave us free ammo) and they awarded us Swiss medals if we passed.

They shot with K31's but, as I recall, they allowed us to use any .30 cal we wanted to.

Me too. I was the Executive Officer for a number of years. I quit when the DOI issues started to bug me.

I miss Pepper. He taught me a lot about the 1911. He was a friend/fan of the late Jeff Cooper and followed many of his handgun principles. Used to love his hand painted bad guy targets. The range procedures did get progressively more inconvenient over the years.
