I snagged some primers from a guy who was selling off his stock to scale back his shooting hobby and is planning to use the proceeds to travel.

I paid more than I wanted, but it was a win for me in a few ways.

1.) I was able to get more than just a single brick of 1000 of a single type
2.) I did not have to pay a hazmat fee
3.) I didn't support a business like Midway who is upcharging AND charging a hazmat fee

Hopefully I'll have enough to get me through for a good bit and by the time I need primers again, they'll be available on the public market for more reasonable prices. I'd love to be able to find them at gun shows again for a reasonable price.

I hate to say it but I thing "reasonable" is going to be a sliding scale. :sad20:

I don't know if I mentioned it in this thread, (I may have already - I didn't go back to check) but a friend of mine was at a gun show in Nebraska where a guy was selling primers for $30 a sleeve of 100, and people were lining up to get them. That's unreasonable to me.

At this point I don't expect primers to ever drop below $40 again.

Yup. I haven't done the gun show scene since before the pandemic. Right now, I am mostly just too busy with too much going on in my life (finishing a fairly major house renovation, working 45+hrs a week, my brother-in-law and his family just moved in with us, kids' swim team).

But from what I've heard, primers still aren't any cheaper at a gun show than what you'd be paying online. Now, you might save because of no shipping and hazmat and might be able to get a few boxes. So there is of course that.

But I can't blame Midway and others for charging shipping and hazmat when that's a cost to them. And I can't call it much of an upcharge when manufacturer prices have jumped a couple of times by a LOT in the last year. Does it suck as the consumer to pay that much? Hell yeah it does. But it still makes reloads way cheaper than commercial ammo. I'd rather a more expensive reload, than a reload I can't make because the primers aren't available at all.

Its still way cheaper than the silly $250-350 a box of a year ago gun shows and gougers were selling them for. And between some more supply and I think Midway and some others raising prices enough, they seem to be having a somewhat steady supply being put up for sale and being available for actual whole hours. Its a major disincentive for gougers, which overall makes the price cheaper for 95+% of people trying to buy primers. Yeah, it makes it more expensive for the few guys who manage to get notifications or are running bots who'd swoop in and buy a 5k case for 5-6cpp or a box or three at a similar price.

But it means way more can access them.

Prices will probably come down. It wouldn't surprise me if in a year prices are down to a sustainable 6cpp. I doubt they'll go lower until material costs go down. Primer manufacturers are charging a minimum of 40% over, and I think some with a couple of price hikes are looking at about 60-70% over what they had been 2 years ago. Which means unless they reduce prices, the cheapest you'll likely find them, assuming sellers stick to a $ value profit vs a percentage profit (which is unlikely), is probably going to be about $44-55. If they go with a percentage profit you are talking more like $50-60.

So yeah, EVERYONE selling primers is up charging still. They've got the demand and it cuts back on the gouging in a major way. But I don't think it is sustainable as supply increases and demand drops. But it'll probably be a year before we see prices start to settle in around the 5-6cpp range and it's going to take copper and chemical's prices to come down (most of the manufacturer price increase is because of the increase in copper, though lead has gone up too for the lead styphenate). If we are lucky, that'll also be happening over the next 12 months, but I think copper price increases are going to be more durable than just 12 months. I think they'll come down, but I think it is going to be a several year tail and might not come back to where they had been.

Of course if supply goes up, if I can buy several boxes or even cases being sold again at $60/1k or so and I can buy several to spread the shipping and hazmat, or places running free hazmat over a certain $ order, that ends up being a ton more savings. I was low on SPM primers and Brownell's had some recently. I didn't really want to bet them, but I also really want to be able to reload .357 as I have a plan to get a .357 revolver and lever gun this fall. Not spreading that shipping and hazmat around meant it went from 7.5cpp to 10.50cpp :-(

I grabbed a brick last week, got desperate for 300BO subs, had everything else, even $90 for 1K primers (and about $220 pre-covid for 1k bullets/powder) beats the crap out of the current $1.50-$2 per round for decent subs.

Yes, I think the prices are higher than they should be, but if you need em bad enough, well, you have to make that call. I am looking for some small pistol primers, but I'm not too desperate and I'll wait til I can get them for a halfway decent price, hopefully. I did pay too much for some large rifle match primers from BPS recently, but I really wanted some, so I sprung for em.

A truer statement ever spoke. I started casting my own heads and now well stocked, if I just can figure out how to make primers. I have seen more powder lately maybe things will start to loosen up. I even checked the overseas market for primers. China and Russia both are selling but, I will not support them in any way if I can help it.

That's the real crux of the matter. It doesn't matter what other components you have, if you don't have primers, you're kinda screwed.

How true, other than putting a match head in the primer pocket and covering it with gorilla tape there are no options including the match head.

Yeah, making priming compound isn’t exactly bathtub chemistry for lead stephynate, oxygen donors, sensitizers, etc. easier to make Mercury fulminate. Which is not the easiest and is of course corrosive when burned. Plus, dangerous AF to make them all.

    Got to be quick

Some online sellers of reloading supplies allow you to put in your email address to be notified when primers are in stock. Just wondering if
    1) people have done this and been notified
    2) after being notified, were you able to successfully order the in stock primers.

Midway has notified me several times on ammo, 350 Legend, 45-70 and others. You have to be quick because it sells out in an hour or so.
Brownells has notified me on parts well over a year, maybe two years later, they even called me!
One other company had notified me about ammo several months or a year later.
With Midway you have to renew the notification if you miss the opportunity.

Berry's and Starline brass have sent me notifications along with others as discussed. The only issue if you do not jump on it within several minutes poof they are gone.

I just stopped in at Molly's on the way to Chestertown. They have a stack of bricks of CCI SPP in stock. I grabbed up two before I asked the young man what the price was. $149.99/k. Having just taken delivery of 2K from Brownell's at exactly 1/2 that price, I put them back on the shelf. The young man stated "you can't get them, and that's the going price". I said "no - that's the price to rip-off your customers".

I'm sure they will be gone shortly.

If they sold them at $75 they would not have been on the shelf when you went there.
If they sell faster then you can re stock the price is not high enough. If they are still there when you get the next shipment in, they are priced too high.
    Law of supply and demand.

I got a discord notification last week and got CCI #41 SRP
Now need to order pills for them and find powder.

Thank you for that lesson on the law of supply and demand . . .
Generate the highest profit you can from your customers during a time of supply distress.
    Let the market rule.

But when it's over, I will not likely be stopping at Molly's much.
    Let the market rule.

Or maybe they raised the prices so that people would not buy to hoard. Just those that really needed it would buy it.
